The CW’s Black Lightning to End After Upcoming Fourth Season

Another Arrowverse show is biting the dust in the new year. Black Lightning fans will be disappointed to know that the upcoming fourth season will be the final season of the show. The new season is scheduled to premiere on February 8th, 2021. It is not known how many episodes will be there in the final season but typically, each season had 16 installments.

Black Lightning follows Jefferson Pierce, a former Olympian and an educator in the high school in Freeland. Nine years ago, he helped the city by using his powers to sense and harness electricity and went by Black Lightning. He had to give up being a superhero because it affected his family.

In the present day, he is forced to become his superhero alias once again as a criminal gang called The 100, led by the dangerous Tobias Whale, starts terrorizing his city. He is joined by his family- his two daughters, Anissa and Jennifer, who possess the same powers as their father and his ex-wife, Lynn, an expert in metahuman medicine.

The show features Cress Williams, China Anne McClain, Nafessa Williams, Christine Adams and others.

There has been no announcement from the CW explaining the reason behind Black Lightning’s cancelation. The show had received an overwhelming response when it debuted in 2018, mainly because of its principally black cast and characters, which was a first in a superhero series.

Earlier this year, the CW had announced that another Arrowverse show, Supergirl, will be ending after its sixth season. With two popular shows ending, the superhero universe will be going through some changes.

However, both Black Lightning and Supergirl have spawned spin-off shows. Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman was introduced in his cousin’s show in the second season and the world had been waiting for him to get a show of his own since then. After four years, the world is finally getting its wish- the CW announced that the first season of Superman and Lois is premiering on the network on February 23rd, 2021.

The fourth season of Black Lightning will feature a backdoor pilot to Jordan Calloway’s standalone Painkiller series. Painkiller appeared in Black Lightning first as Jennifer’s love interest who had Olympic aspirations and then as a resurrected cybernetic assassin of the A.S.A.

Not much is known about the Painkiller series except that it is in the pilot production stage now.

The fourth season of Black Lightning kicks off on Monday, February 8th, 2021, on The CW.
