Starlight and Hughie’s relationship has been a bit strained in The Boys Season 3. Over the episodes, we saw Hughie’s insecurities grow while Annie becomes increasingly helpless around Homelander. Episode 5 explores this further as the two have disagreements, leaving us wondering if they will break up or separate.
I think Starlight and Hughie will NOT break up. Although they’ve gone on their own paths to destroy Homelander, the two will eventually patch up and come together.
If we look at The Boys comics, it ends with Annie and Hughie ending up together. Their story has a proper happy ending with both settling down in Scotland, which happens to be Hughie’s childhood home. The two even plan on having kids of their own.
Their relationship is quite close to the source material in the TV series. Of course, the two have disagreements in the worst possible scenario from time to time, but eventually, they iron out all their differences.
For instance, in Season 1, Hughie treats Starlight as a source of information on what’s happening inside Vought and nothing more. As a result, even though the two form a connection, it takes time for their relationship to develop, which it does by the end of Season 1.
In Season 3, the primary source of conflict between them is Hughie’s insecurity of being weak and unable to save Starlight from Homelander. He is envious of her ex-boyfriend because he, like Annie, is a supe. Later on, when he finds out that Billy Butcher has Compound V24, he takes them to feel powerful.
When he reveals this to Annie/Starlight, she is furious because it’s not what she wants with Hughie. She likes the fact that he is human, unlike her. She knows what it is to have all the powers in the world and still feel like a liar and a pretender. After all, her powers weren’t God’s gift but a part of Vought’s corrupt experiment.
Hughie then promises her he won’t take any more of that compound but ends up taking it anyway. He loves this newfound power because it feeds his insecurity and makes him feel like he is useful in the lives of the people around him.
However, this time he goes a step further. Along with Billy Butcher, he makes a deal with Soldier Boy to kill Homelander. Soldier Boy is no saint. He is the reason behind Marvin’s death and perhaps the death of thousands if not millions of people.
Annie sees Hughie turning to the dark side and doesn’t want him to partner with Butcher in his endeavors. She tells him how all she needs is Hughie to be with her and not take the responsibility of saving her. But Hughie’s got the taste of power, and as we all know, it is pretty addictive, and so he goes with Butch.
This leaves us with the question of what will happen next. If Season 3 goes anything like the previous two seasons, we might see the couple deal with things on their own before coming together again.
Homelander is already losing his mind to the point of no return. He killed Alex, kidnapped Queen Maeve, and Starlight might just be the next one on his hit list. So either she’s going to get in a lot of trouble, or she might be tip-toeing around him, trying to plan how best to get rid of him.
In fact, she already has a lot on her plate, considering she might want to find Queen Maeve. Hughie, on the other hand, is going to enter a mess so huge that he might lose something important at the end of it all. There’s a great chance that he might inject himself with more Compound V24 and, in the end, actively participate in the battle against Homelander.
Hopefully, both their arcs will converge, and the two will be in a better place as a couple. The Boys Season 3 Episode 6 releases on June 23 at 3:00 AM PT. Catch it on Amazon Prime Video.
