Deadline Releases the Batman Screenplay Online Ahead of The Oscars

The official screenplay for the latest entry to the Batman franchise is now available to read for free online.

The film, which premiered on March 4, 2022, stars Robert Pattinson in the titular role of the caped crusader alongside Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Jeffrey Wright as Commissioner Gordon, Colin Farrell as The Penguin, Paul Dano as The Riddler, and Andy Serkis as Alfred.

Soon after the release, The Batman quickly rose to topple several other films and is set to close out 2022 at No. 6 in the domestic box office charts and No. 7 worldwide.

Deadline has released the screenplay as part of its ‘Read the Screenplay’ series, an initiative highlighting the scripts of this year’s award-winning films.

The piece has been co-written by director Matt Reeves and Peter Craig, a novelist who also formulated the scripts for movies like Bad Boys for Life and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part One. He is also the brains behind this year’s blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick.

One fascinating detail about the screenplay is that it is just 129 pages long for a 3-hour film. It is evidence that action sequences rather than dialogues heavily dominate the movie.

Deadlines’s confidence in The Batman’s chances to win many awards has excited many superhero fans. But trends suggest otherwise.

Superhero-centric films often send shockwaves at the box office but are rarely showered with awards or are critically acclaimed.

Likewise, The Batman hasn’t broken that barrier despite winning two Saturn Awards for Best Director and Best Costume Design.

The Golden Globe nominations, which came out early this month, snubbed the movie entirely. The only superhero film that received any acknowledgment was Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which made it to the list in two categories.

Generally, the Golden Globe Awards are treated as predictors of what will happen at the Oscars. So, the chances of The Batman shining strong at the Oscars seem slim.

Not all hope is lost, though. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association has recently been criticized for its one-dimensional voting body, which might cause a change in the voting personnel.

It remains to be seen whether The Batman can get a podium finish in any category this year.

The film has been featured in 3 of the ten shortlists that the Academy released this year, namely Sound, Visual Effects, and Makeup and Hairstyling shortlists.

Although the film was whitewashed by the Golden Globes this year, it can very well win an Oscar in one of the technical categories.

Unfortunately, an Oscar for one of the more prominent categories seems unlikely, given the failure of the film to win anything substantial in other major award ceremonies so far.

About The Batman

The Batman is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Batman. Produced by DC Films and distributed by Warner Bros. Directed by Matt Reeves and written by Peter Craig, the film will feature Twilight star Robert Pattinson in the titular role.

Other cast members include Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Barry Keoghan, Jayme Lawson, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell.

The brand-new Batman solo will see Bruce Wayne/ Batman in his second year of fighting crime as he explores the corruption that plagues Gotham City and how it may tie to his own family, in addition to coming into conflict with a serial killer known as the Riddler. Set in the parallel universe Earth-2, the movie will be separate from the rest of the DCEU canon.
