The Batman Is a Lot More Expensive Than Initial Estimated Cost

Warner Bros. is staking a lot of money on its DC horse as the impressive upcoming titles in the DCEU give fans the hopes of a new and better era for its superheroes.

The first film to launch this array of ambitious DC projects is Matt Reeves’ The Batman. And now that the real budget and box-office predictions for the film have been revealed, it sure looks like Vengeance is the hero WB needed the most.

With The Batman marking the first film to get a proper theatrical release after WB’s strategy to premiere its entire 2021 film slate simultaneously on HBO Max, the studio has spent a lot on the film.

So much so that it has now been revealed that The Batman cost a lot more than its initial estimated price from a year ago, which was previously reported by Deadline to be around $100 million.

However, Variety has now revealed that the film’s budget is twice as bigger with a staggering $200 million.

If this is an accurate estimation, the film lands fourth on the list of the most expensive DCEU films, just beneath Justice League ($300 million), Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice ($263 million), Man of Steel ($225 million).

As for solo Batman projects, it is topped only by Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises ($250 million).

The article also predicted its box-office earnings, adding that The Batman has ‘the best shot’ since Spider-Man: No Way Home to get people excited about watching a film on the big screen.

As more and more people return to cinemas with the threat of the pandemic waning slowly, The Batman’s opening weekend is estimated to be somewhere between $100 million to $125 million at the domestic box office.

Warner Bros. also recently announced that it has pulled the film from its release in Russia due to the invasion of Ukraine by Russian military forces.

A spokesperson for WarnerMedia said in a statement,

“In light of the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine, WarnerMedia is pausing the release of its feature film ‘The Batman’ in Russia. We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves. We hope for a swift and peaceful resolution to this tragedy.”

With the film releasing a bit later in China on March 18, the region is expected to make up a large portion of the film’s overseas box-office collection.

After many long and excruciating delays, The Batman finally releases in theatres this Friday, March 4, with critics so far having only praises for the film.
