The Apothecary Diaries Novels Get Anime Adaptation In 2023
TOHO Animation announced that an anime adaptation of Natsu Hyuga and Touko Shino’s The Apothecary Diaries light novel series is in the works that is slated to premiere this year. TOHO is producing this anime in collaboration with OLM.
The official website for the anime released a teaser visual, a project trailer, the main staff, and revealed that Aoi Yuki will voice the main character Maomao.
The novel series that the anime is based on are set in a fictional land known as the East, which is ruled by an emperor whose consorts and serving women live in a sprawling complex known as the hougong, the rear palace.
The plot follows an unassuming girl Maomao, who was raised in a quaint town by an apothecary father. Maomao seems like an ordinary girl on the surface, but has a quick wit and an extensive knowledge of medicine.
One unfortunate day, Maomao’s life is upended when she is kidnapped and sold into service at the rear palace. She is forced to work there as a lowly maid until the head eunuch Jinshi takes notice of her sharp mind.
Jinshi sees through Maomao’s façade and makes her a lady-in-waiting to none other than the Emperor’s favorite consort. Through the course of the manga, we see the trials and tribulations that Maomao endures as she navigates life in the palace.
The anime is being directed by Norihiro Naganuma, who is also supervising the scripts. Akinori Fudesaka is the assistant director and Yukiko Nakatani is designing the characters.

‘The Apothecary Diaries’ is a light novel series written by Natsu Hyuga and illustrated by Touko Shino. The series will be receiving an anime adaptation in 2023.
The story follows a young girl, Maomao, who is the daughter of an apothecary and possesses an extensive knowledge of medicine and herbs. When she is kidnapped and sold to the rear palace, she is forced to navigate life in this new, foreign environment.
