Maomao has another case to solve in episode 19 of ‘The Apothecary Diaries’ titled “Chance or Something More.” Lihaku tells Maomao the truth about the warehouse fire, and Maomao realizes how all the past cases she has solved are coincidentally interconnected.
However, the coincidences come together all too well, making everything seem carefully planned. Maomao realizes someone’s life is in danger and rushes to save them.

2. Episode 20 Speculation
Maomao’s leg is injured and bleeding. Jinshi will have to get her medical aid immediately. Despite what her father says, Maomao follows her gut and manages to save Jinshi right on time. Nobody suspected the pillar would fall, and if it weren’t for Maomao, Jinshi would have died.
All of this feels too carefully crafted to be a mere coincidence. From all the cases Maomao was involved in, to both Suirei’s and Lakan’s involvement and Lakan’s presence at the ceremony hall right when Maomao needed help, it cannot be a coincidence.
Lakan being the mastermind seems believable, but would he want his own daughter to get as hurt as Maomao did?
3. Recap of episode 18
Jinshi cannot stop thinking about Maomao’s expression at Jinshi’s mention. Lihaku rushes to Maomao, saying a thief broke into a warehouse while the fire broke out.
Ceremonial tools got stolen, and all the past cases Maomao has helped with turned out to be related. Maomao doesn’t think it is all a coincidence. A tall court lady who smells like medicine is supposedly involved, which reminds Maomao of Suirei.
Jinshi spots Maomao and Lihaku talking and is annoyed at how close they look. Maomao explains everything to Jinshi, and he baits her with a reward if she solves the mystery. Maomao immediately gets to work and starts researching.
Maomao realizes that the pillar hanging on top of the ceremony hall is dangerous. If it were to fall, the person performing the ceremony would die. Maomao learns something and immediately rushes to the hall before that day’s ceremony begins.
The guard stops Maomao, but she provokes him and gets hit across the face. However, she refuses to stop, saying if they don’t heed her warning and lose someone of noble birth, they will all be executed.
The guard doesn’t believe Maomao, but Lakan appears, backing her up. Maomao rushes inside to stop the ceremony, but the pillar starts falling. She tackles the person to the ground, getting her leg injured in the process, but she manages to save them both.
The person at the ceremony was Jinshi, who gets worried about Maomao’s state. She passes out, and Jinshi carries her out. Lakan watches it all unfold in silence.
