Amane and Mahiru get closer in episode 1 of The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rottem, titled “Dinner with the Angel”. Amane carries Mahiru home because of a sprained ankle after giving her first aid. A casual remark from Amane leads to them arranging to have Mahiru cook for the both of them, after splitting the expenses.
Amane accidentally comes to know about Mahiru’s birthday, which turns out to be in a few days. Wanting to give her a present, he consults Itsuki and Chitose. Mahiru reveals that she doesn’t usually celebrate birthdays and has never told anyone about it, but is happy with Amane’s presents.

Episode 3 Speculation
Mahiru has started cooking for Amane, and they have started eating their dinner together. In the next episode, Mahiru may also give Amane some pointers to cook since he doesn’t know how to. Their relationship is progressing smoothly, and they may soon start to consider each other as friends, at the very least.
Christmas is also coming up soon in the series, and Chitose and Itsuki may invite Amane to a party. Amane may also invite Mahiru to the party and may introduce her to his two friends if she is comfortable with that.

Episode 2 Recap
Amane finds Mahiru sitting in the park and finds that she sprained her ankle while rescuing a cat. He comes back with first aid items to dress her sprain. Mahiru is a little surprised that he is good at giving first aid. He gives Mahiru his PE pants and hoodie and takes her back home on his back. Mahiru thanks him after they reach home.
In the evening, Mahiru comes to return Amane’s clothes and bring food to him. Amane is happy about the Korokke in his food but lets it slip that he would like to eat them fresh sometimes. To his surprise, Mahiru tells him that she will consider cooking at his place if they split the expenses.
Amane asks Mahiru if she isn’t worried about his safety. She replies that he already knows her position in school so he won’t make a move. She also says that she doesn’t consider him a threat since she isn’t his type.
They decide on some rules, and Amane starts paying her a little extra for her labor besides splitting the cost of materials. They also decide to share the work of shopping and cleaning up. They eat together after Mahiru prepares the food, and Amane is delighted about how delicious everything is.
While cleaning up, Amane once again asks if it’s ok to cook for someone and dine together with someone she doesn’t even like. Mahiru replies that it’s fine since she loves cooking and Amane appreciates her cooking so much.
After finishing their exams in school, Itsuki asks Amane about it. Chitose, Itsuku’s girlfriend and their classmate, also joins them and Amane complains about Itsuki petting her head and showing PDA.
Amane and Mahiru talk about their grades after eating and cleaning up. While Amane works hard enough to maintain their grades as a condition for living alone, Mahiru’s are perfect, and she murmurs that she works hard because she has to but doesn’t explain and takes her leave.
Amane sees that she dropped her student ID and runs to return it to her, but not before seeing that her birthday is in 4 days.
Amane discreetly asks Mahiru if there is anything she wants to which she replies a sharpening stone for knives. Desperate, he asks Itsuki and Chitose. Chitose gives him some ideas while going back home, and he begs her to come shopping with him. Chitose agrees in exchange for a crepe.
Amane gives Mahiru her present on her birthday. She suspiciously asks him how he knew about it, and he tells her. She tells him he should have just ignored it since she doesn’t celebrate her birthday anyways. Amane gives her the paper bag and tells her to consider it a token of his gratitude.
Mahiru finds a hand cream inside, and Amane tells her it’s because she does so much work for him and thus, it will be good for her hands. She also finds a teddy bear which Amane embarrassingly tells her that he just picked on a whim and she can get rid of it if she wants. Mahiru holds the teddy bear happily and tells him she will never do something so cruel.
Amane is surprised to find that Mahiru hasn’t received a birthday present before since she is so popular. Mahiru tells him that she hates birthdays and don’t like telling others about it as she doesn’t like accepting gifts from strangers. She further states that she accepted his because he is not a stranger.
Amane finds himself wanting to pet Mahiru’s head but stops himself in time. Mahiru happily thanks him for his gift again.
