Recap of Takopi’s Original Sin Episode 1

Takopi’s Original Sin started right with the introduction of the main character, Shizuka Kuze, with Takopi, an octopus-shaped alien from a planet named Happy. She found him in a park, where he was starving. She gave him some of her leftover lunch, and they quickly became friends. The Octopus told her its name, but since it was in an alien language, she didn’t understand it, so she decided to name him Takopi, and he accepted the name.

Takopi told her that he was sent to spread happiness throughout the universe, but his ship crashed on Earth and he was temporarily stuck here. He spreads happiness using gadgets that he stores within himself. One such gadget was the happy camera, with which he took a selfie with Shizuka. Right before he could explain the function of the camera, Shizuka took off, saying she had to visit the stationery store.

The anime showed clear signs that Shizuka was getting bullied by her classmates, but since Takopi is new to the earth, he didn’t understand why Shizuka was generally unhappy, but simply wanted to see her smile, so he stuck with her. In the following days, Shizuka diligently visited Takopi at the park, but didn’t use a single one of Takopi’s happy gadgets, and always went back early with the excuse of having to go to the stationery store. However, one day she took Takopi to her home where she introduced him to her dog, Chappy.

At her home, we learnt that Shizuka’s father had left her family a very long time ago, and the only support Shizuka felt was from her dog, Chappy, whom she loved dearly. Her mother was a prostitute who barely paid attention to her, which is likely one of the reasons why Shizuka still gets bullied. Takopi obviously did not understand any of this, but happily nodded away anyway. When he saw that Shizuka smiled really bright when she was with Chappy, he was determined to make Shizuka smile with his happy gadgets, and he expressed this too.

Shizuka, too, seemed somewhat satisfied with this and bid goodbye to Takopi. The next day, Shizuka came back from school to meet Takopi in a horrible state. She had been physically harassed and stomped on at school, but Takopi just considered this to be a fight between friends, and handed her a ribbon that supposedly fixed fights between friends. Shizuka asked Takopi if she could take it back home and use it, and Takopi permitted it even though it was against the rules.

The episode took an extremely dark turn when Takopi went to Shizuka’s house to find out that she had used the ribbon to hang herself in her house. Takopi felt guilty because Shizuka died after he broke a rule that was imposed on him. He also failed to understand what aspect of Shizuka’s life prompted her to take her own life. This was when he used the happy camera from the beginning of the episode, which had the ability to rewind time to the moment of capture. Takopi decided he’d follow Shizuka around to understand her sadness and fix it.

Speculation of Episode 2 of Takopi’s Original Sin

After walking around with Shizuka, Takopi realised that Shizuka experienced pretty bad bullying from a girl in her class named Marina. He, too, was terrified by her and couldn’t do much to help her other than inform one of Shizuka’s classmates. Regardless, he tried his best to better Shizuka’s school life in the littlest of ways, which actually worked, and even Shizuka agreed that her life at school had gotten more bearable.

Parallel to this, it was revealed that Marina, Shizuka’s bully, had her own problems. Her family was falling apart because Marina’s father was spending time with Shizuka’s mother, which caused her mother to become hysteric. The upcoming episode will likely delve more into Marina’s problems, explaining why she started bullying Marina.
