Strongest Wrestlers in Hinomaru Sumo – Ranked!

Hinomaru Sumo never received the recognition it deserved due to its choice of sport – sumo wrestling.

While the series started with a pretty formulaic premise, as the story progressed, it stood out due to its fantastic art that perfectly conveyed the intensity of the sport.

Each and every character felt extremely real and remained with the readers even after the series ended.

To the delight of the manga readers and sports anime fanatics, Hinomaru Sumo received an anime in 2018. The show was packed with powerful matches and emotional moments, both of which contributed to its success.

Every bout had us on the edge of our seats, which made Hinomaru Sumo one of the best action and sport based anime.

Unfortunately, it did not get a second season due to its lack of popularity.

But, in the end, despite not getting the attention and recognition it deserved, Hinomaru Sumo fulfilled its goal of showing how incredible the sport of sumo-wrestling is.

For the manga readers who would like to revisit the characters, and the anime fans who don’t mind the spoilers, I have made a list of the strongest wrestlers in Hinomaru Sumo, so let’s dive right in!

17. Batomf Batbayar aka Hakurou Shou

Position – 2nd Seat of Eastern Makushita

By doing so, he makes up for the weaknesses in Mongolian wrestling, as well as improves and specializes in fighting close range.

Batomf is the first-ever foreign high school student to take the only foreigner’s spot as a first-year, and even defend it in his second year.

He later became a pro-wrestler under the name ‘Hakurou Shou,’ which is actually the professional name of the current ( real-life) Japanese Yokozuna, who is also a Mongolian and is considered to be the greatest in the history of professional sumo.

Kirihito can only last around 20 seconds per bout, after which he will become extremely weak.

Despite such a handicap, he made his competitive debut in the final of Inter High’s team competition, which helped him eventually reach the maegashira status.

While he can use his intelligence and creativity to help not only himself but all the team members to progress, as soon as opponents figure out his fast-paced counter-attacking style, all they have to do is wait for him to lose stamina.

While his techniques are still on par with most of the wrestlers on this list – if not for his small lungs, Kirihito could have easily ranked in the top 5.

15. Tonbokiri Rui

Position – 5th Seat of Western Megahashira

Stable – Yamatokuni Stable

Famous Attack – Unknown

Tonbokiri Rui is one of the top professional sumo wrestlers, and has been given the title of “Three Great Spears,” along with two of his friends.

Despite his ruthless moves, his skill has been noted even by Shinya Ozeki. While the latter fought him out of anger, he soon realised that Rui possesses great skill.

Tonbokiri is immensely respectful of strong and talented wrestlers, but looks down upon the rest, and believes that they should quit. This personality of his has led to Rui severely injuring others.

In the ring, he is known for his deceitful moves, as he could do anything, including just walking away to secure his victory.

Thanks to his European-like build, and powerful body, he simply picks up the heaviest of wrestlers and toys with them.

Masato’s build is his greatest strength, and the envy of many wrestlers, to the point where they feel that it’s wrong for someone playing sumo in such an “untraditional” way to get that kind of body.

12. Nochi aka Juzumaru

Famous Attack – Unknown

Nochi is from the National Treasure generation, and is extremely strong. He is the heaviest wrestler, yet, has a very soft heart.

Furthermore, he went on to win the title of High School Yokozuna in his third year and even conquered the All-Japan Championship, acquiring a Tsukedashi qualification.

What makes him such a strong wrestler is his large build, which allows for powerful and quick tosses. Furthermore, when fighting close range, he can often remain carefree and confident that his opponent won’t be able to lift him. Accompanied by a quick open palm strike, Hikage has a wide array of attacking options.

Due to this, after his graduation, he started his professional career and rose to the rank of Komusubi like it was a child’s play. He even defeated Ozeki and Sekiwake class wrestlers, solidifying his place as a mighty sumo wrestler.

What is noteworthy to mention is that he has secured the seat of Western Ozeki for more than three decades and was never demoted.

However, due to the harsh reality of being at the top and not wanting to disappoint his family, he had lost his will to become the “Yokozuna.” Thankfully, his mentality changed during his final match with Hinomaru.

Mizuki is a prodigy, and even Jinou and Shido agreed that he would become a powerful sumo wrestler.

During the September tournament, his most remarkable feat is his “pure white” Mawashi belt, making him the only wrestler who was never grabbed by the belt.

Unfortunately, that record broke when Hinomaru grabbed his belt and defeated him. Despite that, Mikazuki only lost two matches out of 13, which speaks a lot for his skills.

He even defeated Komusubi, and Sekiwake ranked wrestlers, which makes him stronger than Megahashira.

5. Kanou Akihira aka Ookanehira

Kanou then joined Jinou’s stable and fought him countless times during practice. His counter-attacking style of sumo, where he uses a half-stance to grab and throw a person easily, left him as the victor for many fights.

However, in front of a more experienced wrestler, his exposed chest left him vulnerable to attacks and became the cause of his defeat. Nevertheless, he became one of the very few wrestlers who Jinou ever respected.

4. Kuze Sosuke aka Kusanagi no Tsurugi

Position – Eastern Ozeki

Stable – Yamatokuni Stable

Famous Attack – Great Serpent Cleaver

As the chief rival of our main character, Sousuke’s strength and skills are unquestionable. People say that his body was specially crafted by the Sumo gods – making his build better than any other wrestler.

He is the son of Yamatokuni, a great yokozuna, and with such genes and hard work, of course, he is extremely powerful.

In the ring, like his father, he uses the Left Arm Clamp and his own special move, the Great Serpent Cleaver, which, more often than not, secures his win.

To catch up to Yamatokuni, Sosuke had a brash personality, which caused him to either use ruthless moves or suffer defeat.

However, thanks to being banished from practicing sumo due to the aforementioned reasons, when he was allowed to fight again, his resolve and patience had developed, making him an extremely capable wrestler.

Due to this, he became one of the three wrestlers who defeated Jinou in the finals.

By the end of the manga, he reaches his full potential and decides that he won’t become Yamatokuni (his father) but surpass him.

3. Tennouji Shido aka Doujikiri Yasutsuna

Position – Western Ozeki

Stable – Nagato Stable

Famous Attack – Six Points Torso Slice

As someone who has defeated Hinomaru at one point, Tennoji is a skillful sumo wrestler.

He was the captain of Tottori Hakurou High School’s sumo club during his third year, and even won the title of High School Yokozuna during his first and second years.

His achievements do not stop there, as he is also the winner of the All-Japan Championship and a National Treasure.

What makes him such a good wrestler is his agility and strength that complement and enhance his overall power. With his special move, Six Points Torso Slice, his opponent has no chance of winning.

Furthermore, he is known for possessing excessive information about abilities, builds, weaknesses, and strengths about his opponents, which he uses to adapt his fighting style.

Due to this,he always has a plan in mind on how to secure a victory and is almost never in a difficult position.

According to Jinou, Tennouji has never once gone all out, and despite that, he is a Yokozuna-class sumo wrestler in terms of strength and the way he carries himself.

2. Jinou

Position – Eastern Yokozuna

Stable – Asahigawa Stable

Famous Attack – Unknown

Jinou is the current Yokozuna and has obtained 44 championships throughout his career. At the mere age of 22, he surpassed Yamatokuni, who retired the next day.

Jinou is not just strong, but while other good players are known to be blessed by Sumo Gods, Jinou is known to be the God himself.

Everything from his sheer strength, to his techniques and moves, was on par with the greatest Japanese Yokozuna in prime condition.

The main reason for Jinou’s success was his flexible wrestling style. He never stuck to one sumo style, and depending on his opponent, he could be aggressive, easy-going, and basically anything that could secure him a win.

1. Ushio Hinomaru aka Onimaru Kunitsuna

Position – 3rd Seat of Western Megahashira

Stable – Shibakiyama Stable

Famous Attack – Onigiri

Ushio Hinomaru is the strongest wrestler in Hinomaru Sumo, as well as the protagonist of this series. He defeated the Yokozuna in his final match using his strong Yokozuna sumo and freestyle sumo together and became the strongest of all.

His greatest desire is to attain the title of Yokozuna. He was a two year consecutive champion of Elementary School and later joined Shibakiyama Stable to become a professional wrestler.

Hinomaru can fight opponents larger than him without any trouble, which is why this power of his has been dubbed ‘demon-like.’

Other than his physical strength, Hinomaru is also extremely intelligent and experienced when it comes to sumo, and his improvised moves are capable of defeating even the toughest of opponents.

During his first few fights as a professional sumo wrestler, Hinomaru injured his right arm, and all of his signature attacks such as Onigiri, Oniguruma, etc. that used right underarm grip, were rendered useless.

Onimaru Kunitsuna vs Oodenta Mitsuyo

To make up for this, he learned various other forms, such as judo, MMA, and even sumo wrestling skills designed for short wrestlers. This was a massive step for Hinomaru, as he had always stuck to the Yokozuna way of sumo.

During his final fight with Jinou, his right arm was healed, which meant that along with his “super-strength”-type Yokozuna sumo, he also had the agility and tactics of sumo designed for short wrestlers.

This top tier collection of techniques automatically puts him on a different level than everyone else on this list.
