Here’s Why Stranger Things Season 5 Will Be Shorter Than Season 4

A massive Netflix hit, Stranger Things tells the story of Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her friends as they battle interdimensional monsters to protect their hometown, Hawkins.

With the release of the final two episodes of Season 4 this past Friday, the season has emerged as the biggest yet, featuring the heroes facing off against the evil Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower).

In the months leading up to Stranger Things Season 4, it was widely reported that the season would be substantially longer than previous installments. Seasons 1 through 3 contain eight episodes, each of which is under an hour long.

In contrast, Season 4 has ninr episodes, but has a total runtime of close to 13 hours because of several long episodes.

Duffer Brothers reveal in a new interview with Collider that Stranger Things Season 5 will follow a more traditional episode count and runtime.

According to the creators, in Season 4, there were close to two hours of setup before the main characters even learned about Vecna and what he was doing in Hawkins. Stranger Things Season 5 will begin much quicker now that the setup has been completed.

The creators reveal that they are aiming for the season’s runtime to be somewhere between 8 to 10 hours.

Read Matt Duffer’s quote on Season 5’s runtime:

We don’t want it to be 13 hours. We’re aiming for more like 10 hours or something. I think it’s going to be longer than Season 1 because we just have so much to wrap up, but I don’t think it’s going to be as long as Season 4.

There is little information on Stranger Things Season 5, other than the fact that it will feature a time jump to accommodate the actors’ aging, but it appears the Duffer brothers aren’t planning to create a big season like Season 4.

The cliffhanger ending of Season 4 and Hawkins’ imminent threat make it clear that the Duffers will be able to do away with much of the preliminary mystery and setup in Season 5 and get straight to the action.

In Stranger Things Season 4, a lot of time is spent hopping between groups of characters. Season 4, even with its lengthy runtime, struggled to allocate adequate time to each separate group of characters, with Hopper in a Soviet prison, Eleven in California, Mike in Hawkins, and a few others in between.

As most of Stranger Things’ main characters are now united in Hawkins, the show’s story may be less dispersed, which will also aid the Duffers in keeping the running times down.
