‘Star Trek: Picard’ S2 Teaser—a Major ‘Next Gen’ Character Returns

In the first look of season 2 of Star Trek: Picard, Paramount released a minute-long teaser, complete with classic Trek iconographies and Easter eggs aplenty.

The biggest revelation had to be the return of a fan-favorite character from The New Generation—Q, played by actor John de Lancie. The actor also surprised fans with his appearance in the Contact Day virtual, where the first look was announced.

Kicking off the teaser was Picard’s chateau that is his retirement home,

“The true final frontier is time”.

In an obvious play on the Star Trek franchise’s doctrine of “Space: the final frontier”, the teaser more than hinted at time travel returning as a plot point in the upcoming season. There were several different kinds of clocks and an hourglass moving in the reverse direction to support this hypothesis.

The teaser, which did not feature even a single character in its one-minute-long run did, however, feature important memorabilia from previous Star Trek stories. An antique edition of Paradise Lost, the Stargazer Model, Picard’s Old Com Badge were just a few of them.

It ended with the biggest reveal, that of the return of the ageless alien Q. Actor John de Lancie’s voice takes over the teaser to say just one line, “The trial never ends.” Such feels, though. The actor also took to Twitter to make the announcement.

As one of Star Trek‘s most iconic characters, Q has made other appearances throughout the franchise. But Q’s return onscreen next to Picard is especially exciting after their rivalry became a fan-favorite in Star Trek: The Next Generation.

As for that line, it suggests that the master trickster Q has some plans for meddling with both Picard and humanity in general in the upcoming season.

Actor de Lancie also came on board the live stream panel following the trailer’s debut, marking the occasion of Star Trek’s version of May The Fourth—#FirstContactDay. (For those not in the know, per Trek lore, April 5, 2063 marks the day humans made their first contact with the Vulcans, their first with an alien race.)

During the panel, de Lancie further revealed that Q’s entry into Picard’s life would come at a very “shattering moment” in the show.

“Q’s arrival is, as it often was, unexpected. But it also comes at a shattering moment in the episode…there is significant trauma. And in fact, at the moment, I’m working on how the trauma of this moment hangs around Picard for quite a substantial part of the episode and thenthere is [Q],”
