One series that anime and manga fans alike are bonding on these days is Spy x Family. The reason is that many of the most pertinent questions anime fans are asking are yet to be revealed in the manga as well.
Tatsuya Endo, the creator of the series, seems to know that the secret to the success of Spy x Family is, well, secrets!
The entire story runs on well-kept secrets – a father, mother, and child all living dual lives.
Loid Forger is actually the super-spy Twilight, who has started a fake family as part of his most recent mission, Operation Strix.
The child he adopts, Anya, turns out to be a 5-year-old with mind-reading abilities. His “wife”, unbeknownst to him, is a high-profile assassin named Yor Briar, famously known as the Thorn Princess.
Loid is a professional spy and it is literally his job to discover things. But will Loid be able to uncover the true identity of his fake wife?
Loid will not find out about Yor being an assassin, at least until the climax of the mission if not the very end of the manga. As of chapter 62, the latest chapter of the source material, Loid is still unaware that Yor is a stone-cold killer.
Why Loid Won’t Find Out About Yor Just Yet
The simple and foremost reason is that the charm of the show is in Loid and Yor hiding their identities from each other. The last name of the family itself is “Forger”, symbolizing the explicit cloak-and-dagger theme that the plot and characters share.
This is also one of the reasons that Loid won’t find out about Anya’s telepathy until the very end. Any kind of reveal regarding the true traits and identities of our main characters will surely be the stuff of finales – be it of an arc, the mission, or the story itself.
Thus, it’s very unlikely that Loid will find out about Yor until another hundred chapters. For anime viewers, it’s probably not going to happen until the end of season 2.
Before that happens, though, it is more likely that Yor will find out that Anya knows about her life as an assassin.
Anya is already in on the secret lives that both her fake parents lead. Loid might have convinced the world that he’s just an ordinary psychiatrist; Yor might have convinced Loid that she’s simply an office clerk; but neither of them can fool Anya.
She is an esper and unwittingly read their minds the moment she saw them the first time. She immediately accepted them for who they really are, whereas Loid and Yor believe that Anya loves them for the domestic personas they portray.
Endo will definitely want to milk every undisclosed piece of information before letting the mystery crumble. Since Yor’s secret isn’t a mystery to Anya, that might be pulled into the open first.
Another reason Loid won’t find out just yet, is because he is majorly preoccupied with the different facets of his mission. He has had to change his identity and become a family man for the sake of trailing his target – Donovan Desmond.
In the matter of weeks, this apathetic practical secret agent was forced to become an overly involved father of a primary schooler, and a husband devoted to running a home. Simply put, his plate is too full at the moment.
Does Loid suspect Yor?
There have already been moments when Loid suspects Yor, and Anya of their secrets. Endo reminds us that Loid is exceptionally intelligent and his status as a renowned spy didn’t just come out of nothing.
Though Anya does make her mind-reading a bit too obvious sometimes, Yor has never let her true self slip.
She fits better into her role as a mother and wife than Loid does his. This is mainly because she wishes for this life to be real, willing herself to come across as more normal for the sake of her new child and husband.
But it’s not something that Yor does that makes Loid suspicious of her.
Yor’s younger brother, Yuri, is a secret member of the SSS – the State Security Service in Ostania. When Yuri lets his cover story slip during a dinner, Loid can’t help but wonder whether Yor is who she says she is.
Additionally, Yor has lied to Loid multiple times. When Yor destroys a strength tester machine, she lies to Loid that she developed her strength in a blacksmith apprenticeship.
It’s only fair that Loid being an excellent liar himself might someday be able to tell that he has been lied to.
Yor’s lies will catch up with her. But not until Loid has eased into his multiple roles and begins seeing things and people for who they are.
How will Loid find out about Yor being an assassin?
Loid will find out about Yor being an assassin when both their paths as spy and assassin merge as part of their missions.
In an extremely popular theory, fans are banking on a Mr. and Mrs. Smith-type of situation, where Loid and Yor are either ordered to track and get rid of each other, or Yor is contracted to kill Loid.
Loid is a member of WISE, the Westalia Intelligence Services’ Eastern-Focused Division. Yor is a member of Garden, an paramilitary assassin group that operates within Ostania.
WISE’s goal is to maintain peaceful relations between the rival nations of Westalia and Ostania, and take out any person that threatens this objective. Garden, on the other hand, aims to purge Ostanian traitors.
Loid is living as an Ostanian citizen as a spy for Westalis. He is on an active mission to monitor the actions of Donovon Desmond, the chairperson of the National Unity Party in Ostania, which is an extremist group that wants to damage the truce efforts between the 2 governments.
It is possible that Loid and Yor find themselves on an operation to hunt each other down as a job from their respective groups.
It’s also possible that Yor is told to kill the spy responsible for wanting to sabotage Desmond. She won’t know who this spy is until the very end.
Loid might get intel about this assassination plan and they both might search for one another despite living together in the same house.
There can also be a plot that involves Yuri and the SSS that causes Loid to find out about Yor.
Honestly, there are a lot of scenarios that seem plausible. But something tells me that both Yor and Loid will ultimately reject their missions – and their double lives – if it means sacrificing the family they have come to build.
Anya is the glue that binds the Forgers and will always draw them together, no matter the circumstances. Loid and Yor will choose her over their respective jobs and countries.
Either way, I trust that however this plays out, Endo will make it perfectly wholesome.
