Spelunky 2’s Multiplayer May Be Coming Soon!

Developer Mossmouth just confirmed that many of the planned improvements in Spelunky 2’s multiplayer are now complete, and the mode may be coming by early December!

Upon the release of its PS4 version, Spelunky 2 faced a lot of problems with its multiplayer mode, with many of the problems being too deep to quickly patch up. These numerous problems were the reason why the mode was absent when the game finally released on PC.

But now, the mode may be coming back soon, as Mossmouth has made a lot of the necessary changes to the game’s code to fix it.

For those wondering why it’s taking so long for them to bring back multiplayer in the game, Mossmouth stated that the problems that existed in the multiplayer were much more severe than previously anticipated and “deeper changes of the internal game logic and the rollback were required to get it to where we want it to be.”

That said, it probably took them a lot of time to fix the PS4 version’s issues only, and it’s honestly understandable that they would not want to fix the problems for both the platforms at the same time, as it could lead to a bit of a messy situation. This situation seems to be the only reason for taking them so long to get the mode running.

Not to mention, the developers now have a larger audience to respond to than ever before, so they also have to respond to several feedbacks as well. So, the developers really have a lot of their hands right now.

“This work does slow down the development of online somewhat, since there’s a lot of overlap in the relatively small team working on Spelunky 2. But hopefully you’ve found it to be worth it!”

“In the end, all of this work is going toward the same place, because Spelunky 2 is a game where the different modes and systems are all very interconnected. So rest assured that anything we’re doing, whether it’s for PS4 or Steam, single-player or multiplayer, local or online, will improve some aspect of the game that you’re interested in!”

Anyhow, let’s hope that we’ll have a successful launch of Spelunky 2’s multiplayer mode as it is most certainly worth it!
