A Fresh Take On Space Jam, Director Wants The Rock For Third Film

The wait is over as the Space Jam sequel has finally arrived after 25 years of waiting. The sequel, Space Jam: A New Legacy, has LeBron James saving the day as opposed to Michael Jordan in the first one.

So, obviously, the chances for a possible third film happening along with who will lead the looney tunes pop up in every fan’s mind once they watch the film. We already have an answer to that.

New Legacy director Malcolm D. Lee spoke to EW about the possibilities of a third film in the franchise.

He mentioned that it would all depend on how well the sequel is received by fans. After all, it took two different directors, six screenwriters, five NBA and WNBA All-Stars, two years of production, and a $150 million budget to make the movie.

I never say never. It’s all going to be about whether the fans respond to this positively. But I think the bar has been set so high in terms of the first one with this global iconic superstar in Michael Jordan, and now the same global iconic superstar in LeBron James, who transcends sports.

Who is that next person to put into that universe? And then you’ve got to find a script and story that’s good enough to not repeat what’s been done but will capture the spirit of it and keep it going.

Along with Looney Tunes characters, the sequel stars LeBron James, Don Cheadle, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Zendaya. After Michael Jordan and LeBron, it would be tough to fill the shoes, as Jordan’s 1996 version also became the highest-grossing basketball film in history.

So who does Lee think is suitable to take on the big role? It’s none other than Dwayne Johnson, aka, The Rock. And let’s be honest, who doesn’t love The Rock!

Dwayne Johnson would be an interesting choice. It would be different. I’m not exactly sure what his skill set would be, maybe he goes back to wrestling. That might be interesting.

It took almost three decades for Space Jam to return; here’s hoping it takes less time this time around. Or we’d get to see The Rock become the president before we get to watch him in the third installment.

The Rock is known for making family-oriented hits like Moana, Jumanji, and his upcoming take on DC’s The Black Adam. However, as early critics blasted the sequel for being too similar to the first one, it would be nice to have Wrestling instead of Basketball and give the story a little twist if the third film does happen.

Space Jam: A New Legacy released this Friday in theaters and on HBO Max on July 16, 2021.

About Space Jam: A New Legacy (Space Jam 2)

Space Jam: A New Legacy (also known as Space Jam 2) is an upcoming American live-action/animated sports comedy film directed by Malcolm D. Lee, from a screenplay by Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Keenan Coogler, and Terence Nance.

The film is a sequel to Space Jam (1996) and stars basketball player LeBron James, as well as Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green, and Cedric Joe. The film also features the Looney Tunes characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Marvin the Martian, Pepé Le Pew, Tweety, Sylvester, Foghorn Leghorn, Porky Pig, and Lola Bunny.

Like the previous hybrid films, it will be a combination of live-action and traditional hand drawn 2D animation with some CGI effects

Basketball champion and global icon LeBron James and his young son Dom (Cedric Joe) – who dreams of being a video game developer rather than follow his father’s footsteps – find themselves trapped in Serververse, a virtual space ruled by a rogue A.I. named Al-G Rhythm (Don Cheadle).

LeBron must save his son and get them home safe by leading Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Lola Bunny and the whole gang of notoriously undisciplined Looney Tunes to win a basketball match against Al-G’s digitized champions on the court, the Goon Squad.
