Sopranos Creator Not Interested in Making Prequel Series for HBO

The HBO classic, The Sopranos has made a comeback in the form of the prequel Many Saints of Newark. Now, creator David Chase reveals that HBO wants a streaming series serving as another prequel.

Many Saints started out when Tony Soprano was just a teen, chronicling the life around his father-figure and mentor Dickie Montisanti. The prequel did well in giving more background on the Sopranos characters as well as explaining how Dickie was killed.

But still, it’s ended long before Tony could take control over the Sopranos. As such, Tony’s entire rise to the top as the boss is still uncharted. I’m sure that Sopranos fans would love to see this story on screen.

Now, HBO seems to agree! In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, original series creator David Chase has revealed that HBO wants to order a prequel streaming series for HBO that will cover Tony’s story after Dickie’s death.

Here’s what Chase had to say:

Well, of course, the movie didn’t do well in theaters, but it, like, broke the machine on streaming—it was huge. So now they want me to do another series of Sopranos from the time the movie ends until the time the series begins.

As Chase voices, while the movie was not a hit in theatres, it must have sufficiently impressed HBO with its numbers for the streamer for them to want a full-blown series. Sopranos definitely has the cult fan following for it.

But will Chase do it? He says, “I’m not that anxious to do it.”

He is, however, keen to make another Sopranos movie. He doesn’t reveal if it’s a sequel or prequel, but he definitely teases that he has an idea chalked out for it.

However, Chase also casts a doubt on whether HBO would accept a movie instead of a series.

Besides Chase’s reluctance to make a Sopranos prequel series, it is unknown if any of the Sopranos or Many Saints actors would be available for such an endeavor. In particular, James Gandolfini, who plays young Tony, would have to be approached on the matter.

For now, HBO seems interested, but the project seems unlikely.

Here is another pressing question that fans want answered: What really happened at the end of the Sopranos finale? Or, more specifically, how was Tony Soprano killed? That, the Sopranos director has stated, is never going to happen.

But never say never, eh? For now, we’ll be content if Chase agrees to do another Sopranos prequel.
