Solo Leveling Manhwa Loses its Artist to Cerebral Hemorrhage

Every artist dreams of their life’s work getting the recognition it deserves. Solo Leveling manhwa’s artist DUBU is one of the few who were able to make it a reality.

Solo Leveling rose to popularity pretty quickly. There wasn’t a soul who didn’t know about the manhwa, and the major credit for this goes to the fantastic visuals by DUBU.

The manhwa finally revealed a TV anime this month, but unfortunately, the artist won’t be there to see his work getting the praise it deserves.

Unfortunately, Solo Leveling manhwa’s exceptional artist DUBU (Jang Sung-Rak), passed away on July 23, 2022. REDICE studio has posted an obituary for him, and Yen Press has provided an English translation.

DUBU had been battling a health condition for a long time that finally caught up to him. He passed away from cerebral hemorrhage stemming from a chronic illness.

The artist was also the CEO of REDICE studio, a Korean company that produced Webtoon adaptations of novels. The company told fans that DUBU’s family wished for a small funeral attended by family and friends at his mother’s residence.

Sung-Rak was excited for Solo Leveling’s adaptation more than anyone else. He was overwhelmed with the response, not to mention how the artist thought it all felt unreal as they had put so much effort into it.

It’s quite a shame to lose such exceptional and talented artists, primarily due to the industry’s toxic work environment. I hope the manga and manhwa industry start doing something about it.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sung-Rak’s family and friends. May he rest in peace.
