Tahj Mowry Reveals 90s Sitcom Smart Guy Reboot Is In The Works

Disney’s ’90s sitcom Smart Guy reboot is currently in early development stages. The sitcom initially aired on the Warner Bros. channel from 1997 to 1999. The series ran for 3 seasons, consisting a total of 51 episodes.

Tahj Mowry recently confirmed while talking toET Online that a Smart Guy reboot is in the works, revealing details on the status of the project. The actor played T.J. Henderson, the 10-year-old “pugnacious little shorty with a thousand IQ” who jumps from elementary school to high school in the sitcom.

Mowry mentioned that they have found a writer, and are eager to present a fresh, new take on the 90s sitcom.

There’s been lots of Zoom meetings and talks about this, so we do have the ball rolling on it. It’s just a matter of time and timing, but we do have the possible home for it. We do have a writer, and I feel like I came up with a really fresh take on how we can bring that back with the whole cast and something that is fresh and new. But also something that the diehard fans will still get that nostalgic aspect of it as well.

The series also starred Jason Weaver and Essence Atkins as T.J.’s older siblings Marcus and Yvette. John Marshall Jones played their father Floyd, while Omar Gooding starred as Marcus’ best friend Mo Tibbs. Tinsley Grimes, Arvie Lowe Jr., J.D. Walsh, James K. Ward, Dann Florek, and Kyla Pratt also had recurring roles.

In a perfect world, you will see the whole cast. The person that’s been in the most contact with me about it, and me with him, is probably John Marshall Jones, who played my father in the show. We’re not at that stage yet where we’re checking everyone’s schedule… we’re still in the pre-phases. So that will come. But if all goes according to plan, everyone will be in it.

Although Smart Guy only ran three seasons with 51 episodes, it’s still a beloved show, guaranteed to make one nostalgic after over two decades after its release. As the series has aired episodes on The WB, Disney Channel, BET, and MTV2, the reboot could end up on any of those channels’ parent networks, HBO Max, Disney+, or Paramount+.

All three seasons of Smart Guy are available to watch on Disney+.
