Smallville Fan Recounts Touching Encounter with Tom Welling & Erica Durance

A Smallville fan shared a touching story of meeting the show’s lead stars, Tom Welling and Erica Durance, during a recent convention appearance. Welling and Durance played the roles of Clark Kent and Lois Lane as teenagers, before Clark became Superman.

At present, Tom Welling hosts a Smallville retrospective podcast alongside co-star Michael Rosenbaum, recounting their experience of working on the show together.

Smallville aired on WB and The CW from October 2001 to May 2011 and explored the side of Superman that very few shows managed to capture. The show starred Tom Welling as young Clark Kent during his high school years.

Erica Durance played Clark’s love-interest, Lois Lane and Michael Rosenbaum played Lex Luther in the series. The show followed how young Clark came to terms with his Kryptonian heritage and how it changed his regular teenage life.

Throughout the show’s ten seasons, Clark faced some of his most iconic friends and foes. Fans of the series still hold the series in high regard, especially because of its unique portrayal of the popular DC superhero.

An animated Smallville continuation is also currently in development. Welling and Rosenbaum’s retrospective podcast also helps keep the show’s legacy alive. Recently, a fan of the series shared his touching story recalling his experience of meeting two of the show’s leading stars.

The story was shared by a fan account, ‘wellingdurance’ on Twitter. The fan opened up about his own emotional connection to Smallville and how much it helped him during their youth. He also revealed how Welling and Durance came to his aid when he found himself overwhelmed during the event.

Check out his heart-warming story below –

Smallville aired at a time when the superhero genre was not as developed as it is now. Back in the early 2000s, the superhero genre mainly found success on the small screen through animated shows.

These animated shows were generally targeted at a younger audience. But, Smallville took a different route by targeting the teenage population through its nuanced approach. The show focused more on Clark’s struggles growing up and his problems as a teenager. It did not focus solely on superhero lore and tales.

Due to this unique approach, Smallville found itself an audience that found the show relatable and enjoyable, without having to rely on the DC superhero’s published history. However, despite taking a different approach, the show remained faithful to Clark’s character.

Smallville’s success paved the way for many other superhero shows to take a different approach. The CW’s Arrow also took a stripped-down approach to Green Arrow. Smallville’s success proved that superhero shows could also appeal to a teen audience, clearing the path for many shows that have since then gathered dedicated fanbases.

Smallville has thus changed how superheroes can be portrayed on the small screen, but the fan’s heartfelt story about his love for the show depicts how much of a personal impact the show has had over the years.
