Michael B. Jordan and Ryan Coogler have reunited for Sinners, a vampire horror film with an amazing ensemble. Jordan and Coogler worked together on several projects before Sinners.
Their first collaboration was on Coogler’s directorial feature debut, Fruitvale Station, in which Jordan portrayed the lead. He collaborated with Coogler again on Creed, Black Panther, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, among the most acclaimed films in the actor and director’s careers.
Given the critical praise and general popularity of their previous works, their reunion in Sinners has been eagerly awaited.
The secrecy surrounding the film has heightened the anticipation, as the plot and most of the characters’ names have remained unknown even after the first trailer debuted. This makes the original vampire film even more interesting as it approaches its 2025 theatrical release when Jordan and the rest of the cast will reveal the story they created.
Michael B. Jordan as Smoke & His Twin
Michael B. Jordan was born in Santa Ana, CA. Jordan’s breakthrough performance was in Fruitvale Station, where he played Oscar Grant III. In the years after, he has achieved notoriety for taking the Rocky franchise in a new direction by playing Adonis Creed, Apollo Creed’s son. He has directed three films centered on the character.
He also appeared as Erik Killmonger in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Aside from his franchise films, Jordan has acted in Just Mercy and HBO’s Fahrenheit 451 adaption.
Character: In Sinners, Jordan plays identical twins, one of whom is called Smoke. The twins embrace and wish each other well before confronting the fearsome vampires. Smoke must remain steady and keep the door locked despite hearing cries to unlock it, knowing that doing so will result in the vampires killing him and everyone within. Jordan’s characters know how to handle themselves and wield the weapons to take down the vampires.
Hailee Steinfeld
Hailee Steinfeld was born in Los Angeles, CA. Her breakout role as Mattie Ross in True Grit (2010) won her an Academy Award nomination. Steinfeld received additional fame as Emily Junk in Pitch Perfect 2 and Pitch Perfect 3. She portrayed Gwen Stacy in the critically acclaimed Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and its sequel, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
Steinfeld helped launch Apple TV+ by playing the title character in Dickinson, one of the streaming service’s initial episodes. She joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Kate Bishop in Disney+’s Hawkeye.
Character: The name of Steinfeld’s character in Sinners has not been revealed. In the trailer, she can be seen wearing white and dancing seductively in a room filled with other dancing characters.
Since Jordan is playing the protagonists fighting the vampires, Steinfeld may be the antagonist as one of the vampires or as a human in league with the monsters and helps them lure in and hunt their prey so they can feast on their unfortunate victims.
Wunmi Mosaku
Wunmi Mosaku was born in Zaria, Nigeria. Mosaku’s breakthrough role was as Gloria Taylor in Damilola, Our Loved Boy, which earned her a BAFTA Award.
She is best known for playing Hunter B-15 in Disney+’s Loki seasons 1 and 2 and repeated the character in Deadpool & Wolverine. Mosaku has also been in HBO’s Lovecraft Country, BBC’s Luther, Zack Snyder’s Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and the 2022 film Call Jane, which stars Elizabeth Banks and Sigourney Weaver.
Character: The character of Mosaku’s Sinners remains unknown even though the trailer depicts her looking grim while lighting a match. The window behind her is adorned with the names of various meals and ingredients, such as sugar, sweet potatoes, beans, and salt.
She may run a food establishment while taking precautions to defend herself from the increasing vampire danger afflicting her town and its residents.
Jack O’Connell
Jack O’Connell was born in Derby, England. While O’Connell was well-known for his appearance in the British television series Skins, his breakout performance was in 2013’s prison thriller Starred Up.
His career continued with roles as Calisto in the 300: Rise of an Empire sequel, Louis Zamperini in the 2014 adaption of Unbroken, and Laura Dern in the 2018 film Trial by Fire. He most recently appeared alongside Adam Driver in the 2023 film Ferrari.
Character: O’Connell’s unnamed Sinner character is seen kneeling and crying in the trailer while his body is covered with blood and bruises. He is seemingly one of the vampire’s victims and will both witness and experience firsthand the many horrors that they unleash.
Saving others from such brutality adds further weight to the mission of Jordan’s vampire-hunting characters, who seek to take down the monsters that threaten to destroy their world.
