Wu-Tang: An American Saga’s Siddiq Saunderson Talks S2 Premiere

Season 2 of Wu-Tang: An American Saga will be premiering on September 8 on Hulu. Siddiq Saunderson who plays Dennis Coles/Ghostface Killah gives us insights into the upcoming season.

The docu-drama follows the making of the hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan amidst the US’s crack cocaine epidemic — which was the direct result of massive substance use in the country’s major cities in the early 1990s.

Saunderson’s Coles was crucial in bringing together the first seven members of Wu-Tang. For Saunderson, the new season is full of new dynamics as he is to be a father. His beau is none other than Shurrie, his best friend and group-member Bobby Diggs’ sister.

Striking a balance between the relationship he has with Bobby and his romantic partner Shurie, is going to be a compelling act to unravel, says Saunderson in an interview with ScreenRant.

Them [Bobby and Shurrie] kind of battling and leaving me in the middle is an interesting tension that occurs when that happens. Especially because they’re brother and sister, so they have their own tensions that exist within their relationship. It’s a dope story, and I think audiences are going to be excited.”

In Where Is The Buzz TV, Saunderson also expresses how he is a little more comfortable in portraying the real-life Coles in Season 2, especially after the success of Season 1 and the audience’s acceptance of his portrayal. Here’s the full interview:

SIDDIQ SAUNDERSON TALKS ‘WU-TANG: AN AMERICAN SAGA’ SEASON 2 PREMIERE

At the center of Wu-Tang is Bobby Diggs (Ashton Sanders) who pursues music under the stage name The RZA. He seeks to use music as a way of uplifting his family’s financial situation, in stark contrast to his older brother Divine, (Julian Elijah Martinez) who turns to a drug ring.

As explored in Wu-Tang, the life of an average Black man in America is so perilous that they can either end up dead or in jail by the age of 30. “Stick to music… it has better odds,” Season 2 trailer advises.

Wu-Tang: An American Saga Season 2 Official Trailer | Hulu

The first season of Wu-Tang: An American Saga premiered in September 2019. It’s exactly two years later, but Saunderson makes it clear that despite the audience’s building anticipating, it was important to take the longer route and stay safe during the Covid-19 situation.

For the fans who buzzed in with numerous comments and DMs about “What’s taking so long?” Saunderson reminds us that actors are also individuals dealing with the pandemic.

Season 1 took a deep dive into Wu-Tangs origins. Now Season 2 will see Bobby and the gang continue the story, keep off the streets and hopefully feature their break-out album, Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers).
