Shueisha, the publisher of Demon Slayer manga, has been in hot waters recently due to one of its products not being up to the standards that you would expect.
The publisher is one of Japan’s biggest manga companies, with colossal control over anime and related industries such as music. Though better known for their Demon Slayer series, the publisher also has the rights to One Piece, among many others.
However, this incident indeed shows that quality is all that matters.
Shueisha announced that it would be replacing all the sold manuscript reproductions of the final chapter of Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba after they were found to be faulty and lacked the advertised quality.
Shueisha sold these faulty manuscripts (pic above) last year through Jump Fiesta in December and the Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. The Jump Fiesta editions were priced at $350 dollars, while the magazine sets were $35 dollars each.
The buyers soon found out that some drawings were more stretched than the original version, while some were cut in half.
These manuscript reproductions were meant to be based on the original manuscript turned in to the publisher by the mangaka, Koyoharu Gotouge, the creator of Demon Slayer. Therefore, they are meant to give the reader an unfiltered view of the original work.
When buyers registered the original complaint with Shueisha, the company decided to refund 35% of the 472 copies sold from the Jump Festa versions.
However, they decided on full recall after the intervention of Gotouge.
A spokesperson from Shueisha has officially apologized for the inconvenience that was caused to the consumers while confessing that the “[Product] would have made [them] angry even if [they’d] had bought the items.”
Shueisha is offering all buyers a chance to replace the items they brought and get new copies, and those who were refunded will have to repurchase the manuscripts. The publisher is promising that these new copies will be perfect reproductions of the manuscript.
If you were one of these unlucky ones, then get your new copies as soon as possible, and enjoy the unfiltered Demon Slayer.
