“Nurse Jackie” and “Weeds” Will Reportedly Be Back with Sequels

Showtime has recently ordered the spinoffs of several popular series, including Dexter, Billions, and The L Word. To the joy of fans, a prequel series is in development for Dexter, and The L Word universe is set to continue in New York.

Also, some recent returns on the streaming website are Queer as Folk and The L Word: Generation Q, though the former was sadly not well-received by the audience.

Despite all these revivals, one would not have expected a return of the old-popular shows, Nurse Jackie and Weeds. But these comedy shows that ran almost a decade ago are reportedly returning!

Showtime plans to bring Nurse Jackie and Weeds back with their original leads, Edie Falco and Mary-Louise Parker. Former Showtime chief Robert Greenblatt is set to produce both projects executively. Negotiations are ongoing, and the concepts are yet to be finalized.

1. Weeds Actor Justin Kirk Objected to a Weeds Revival

Before the news broke out, Justin Kirk, who played Nancy Botwin’s brother-in-law Andy in Weeds, publicly objected against the revival of the eight-season dark comedy series.

Commenting on the news of a Weeds revival that broke out in 2019, Kirk said to Variety, “Even as a fan, do you really want to see us all old and coming back? By the time of Season 8, I don’t think the general idea was, ‘We should keep doing this!'”

He added, “Look, I love those people, I love that character. I probably know as much as you do about any future reboots. I know they were talking about it, about what it could possibly be. I had heard rumors of various iterations. Once, I heard about it being a prequel with younger characters, and then you just see us in flash forwards. So, I have no idea. Although weirdly enough, I did recently hear of it again, so they may be trying to drag its tired carcass out.”

Kirk also said that if a sequel series would happen, the actor is not sure that he will return and that his agents last approached him about it a long time ago, indicating that Andy might get recast.

Two of Lionsgate’s most acclaimed series, Nurse Jackie and Weeds, are reportedly being revived with the main stars and writer returning. Though everything is still under deliberation, Showtime is hoping for an early 2024 release.

Sources stress to Deadline that the projects are only coming together and deals are still being negotiated. However, Greenblatt, who reportedly came up with the idea of reviving Nurse Jackie, has brought both the lead actors of the shows on board.

The shows are both said to be in the early stages of development. The Weeds sequel is said to be written and executively produced by Christian Torpe, creator of the famous Danish series Rita, and will feature the protagonist in Copenhagen.

On the other hand, Nurse Jackie’s revival will reportedly be written and executively produced by the writers of the original series, Abe Sylvia and Liz Flahive. However, the concept is still being finalized.

The timelines for these shows are yet to be officially announced. However, they might be released as early as the first quarter of 2024, provided the writers’ strike ends.

Weeds has been earning sequels for long, though they have yet to find their way into complete development. In 2019, Lionsgate TV sibling Starz announced a continuation featuring Parker as the protagonist and original series writer Victoria Morrow penning the story.

This sequel was set to feature events ten years after the original and in an era of marijuana legalization. However, unfortunately, the project did not take off. So, for now let us keep our fingers crossed for the revivals!
