Shonda Rhimes, the creator of Queen Charlotte, hints at more possibilities for expanding the Bridgerton universe in the future.
The show stars India Amarteifio as the young queen and has received positive initial feedback from critics and viewers. The six-episode series is a prequel to Bridgerton and is now streaming on Netflix.
Rhimes recently talked to IMDB about her plans for expanding the Bridgerton universe. She revealed that she was interested in exploring the backstory of Adjoa Andoh’s Lady Danbury, a close friend of Queen Charlotte.
Rhimes also expressed her desire to see a young version of Violet Bridgerton, now the mother of the eight siblings. Here’s what she said:
I wasn’t necessarily thinking about this as a Bridgerton spinoff when I started telling the story just because Queen Charlotte is so singular. But I also included the stories of Lady Danbury. And you get to meet a young Violet. And I think Violet is fascinating. And there’s a story to be told there.
Queen Charlotte has been a massive success since it premiered, racking up almost 149 million hours of watch time in the first week of May.
It topped Netflix’s weekly rankings for that period. The show has also reached 22 million views, based on Netflix’s method of dividing the hours watched by the length of the show.
Queen Charlotte is off to a great start and shows excellent potential in its early days!
The streaming platform has a strategy of launching many new movies and shows every month, which can sometimes overshadow its efforts to build on its popular titles.
It has already tried to create spinoffs for Squid Game with a reality show and Stranger Things with an animated series. These give us hope that Bridgerton might have more opportunities for extensions that explore the backgrounds of different characters.
Rhimes is one of the most influential names for her skill in finding compelling stories, whether it is spicing up the medical drama genre with Grey’s Anatomy or using her expertise to bring Viola Davis to television with How to Get Away with Murder.
She has done the same with Bridgerton for Netflix. After Queen Charlotte’s dramatic finale, it seems like there are several exciting possibilities for her to make the franchise a truly iconic one.

The cast includes the newly added love interest, Sex Education’s Simone Ashley as Kate Sharma, and Charithra Chandran as Kate’s sister, Edwina.
The sequel is expected to release sometime in 2022.
A spinoff series for Queen Charlotte was also announced by Netflix and is currently in development.
