She-Hulk: Attorney at Law Writer on How Marvel Manages the MCU Timeline

The MCU has released more than thirty films and approximately ten shows in one timeline that has spanned from 2008’s Iron Man to 2022’s She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. With Phase Four drawing to an end, marking a more secure point in the Multiverse Saga, Marvel is moving the MCU along this one timeline for decades.

But how do the creative staff and writers keep track of the timeline? She-Hulk: Attorney at Law head writer Jessica Gao has shed some light on their technique to keep the timeline straight, maintaining consistency on such a wide expanse of films and shows.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law falls after Avengers: Endgame and Shang-Chi and the Lord of the Ten Rings, but also between Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel. This information alone can be confusing when setting the story to keep the inflow of the years followed by the MCU timeline.

In an interview with The Direct, Jessica Gao explained that Marvel has hired an expert who acts as the keeper of the MCU timeline. He keeps track of the timeline regarding where and when each MCU project falls.

There actually is a Marvel person whose job is to trace the timeline of everything. And we checked with him a lot about where the timing is. And so, it’s like, the show is a few years after Endgame.

Jon Watts, director of Spiderman: Homecoming, had mentioned the actual document containing the timeline when he was doing press for his film.

It’s very long. It’s the most amazing thing because it starts at the beginning of time—I don’t remember specifically, but I think it has something to do with Thor. It is truly an amazing document.

Kevin Feige, Head of Marvel Studios, had promised in 2017 that the studio will publish an official chronology of all the MCU projects in the Infinity and Multiverse Saga in the correct order of the MCU timeline.

Maybe once Avenger: Secret Wars, Phase 6 of the MCU, and the Multiverse Saga are over, Feige will finally release that official timeline. But for now, we can only make assumptions while the creators at Marvel have their personal Watcher.
