Shang-Chi Deleted Cuts Reveal Iron-Man Connection & Other Details

One of Marvel’s better titles this year has been Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

If you haven’t watched the film about MCU’s first Asian superhero, it is now available to stream on Disney+, with its Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray releasing on November 30.

Further to lure the fans into buying the DVD copies, 11 deleted scenes from the film are included in it. As expected, these deleted scenes are not available on Disney+, so it might just motivate you to get a DVD copy for yourself.

Chances are, they will eventually be available on the streaming service, but dedicated fans rarely wait that long. The YouTube channel, Mcu Master, has a playlist titled “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Ten Rings All Bonus Extras” that includes all of the 11 deleted clips.

If you’re curious about the scenes, some of which would’ve drastically changed the film’s plot, read further to know about which scenes should’ve been included vs. which ones were better off deleted.

Scenes that should’ve made the cut:

  • Apology

This scene is particularly important as it sees Shang-Chi trying to make up with his sister Xialing for having abandoned her all those years ago.

Xialing & Shang-chi

This scene seems sincere as we see Shang-Chi express how sorry he was that he wasn’t there for her when she needed him the most, but we also see Xialing being reluctant and saying that she can’t really forgive him, as old wounds don’t heal so quickly after just a simple apology.

  • They’re Waiting

This scene extends the post-credit scene we got in the film, further adding to the ‘Apology’ scene. We see Shang-Chi and Katy video-calling Xialing, showing that she has forgiven her brother, and they have reconnected and bonded as siblings again.

Xialing

They’re interrupted by Razor-Fist as he tells Xialing, “They’re waiting,” as it indicates that she is really reforming the Ten Rings organization.

  • Postcard

Postcard extends Shang-Chi and Wenwu’s conversation before dinner, where Wenwu asks if he received the Dragon postcard he had sent. The father reveals that he wanted the siblings to reunite without all the fighting they had to go through.

This scene humanizes Wenwu and shows that he really does care for his wife and kids but has a hard time expressing his love.

  • Two Sons

Another scene that gives Wenwu a softer side, not making him look like the brutal gang leader we see otherwise. Wenwu compares Shang-Chi to Razor-Fist and talks about how he adopted the latter because he saw a strong will in the Romanian boy that reminded him of his son.

It is then followed by Katy and Xialing hilariously analyzing why Razor-Fist’s name doesn’t suit the weapon attached to his arm.

  • Do It Yourself

More than an essential addition, it’s better to consider this scene as an easter egg that further connects this film to the MCU. Wenwu talks about handing some business in Afghanistan and mentions Raza – who in the first Iron Man film captured Tony Stark.

Wenwu

This would’ve been another comic-accurate ‘crossover’ as in the comics, Mandarin is Iron Man’s archenemy.

  • Greatness

This one isn’t exactly a necessary one, but it’s funny. We see Katy and Trevor in a car, and Trevor tries to inspire Katy. Trevor says, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have greatness thrust upon them.”

Katy is baffled by his words, and it’s even funnier when you realize he’s quoting William Shakespeare.

Scenes that are better off deleted:

  • Pep Talk

A scene that I’m glad was cut out. In a déjà vu like scene, Razor-Fist is comforting Katy as they’re hiding on the battlefield, and she’s scared to continue. This scene instantly made me think of the one from Avenger: Age of Ultron where Hawkeye gives Scarlet Witch a similar pep-talk.

Razor-Fist

However, that’s not what makes this scene worthy of being cut; it’s Razor-Fist’s fate. We see him die after his pep-talk with Katy as he passes her the bow so she can continue fighting. Good thing Marvel kept Razor-Fist alive, as we’ll get to see his backstory in the sequel.

  • Take A Shot

This scene shows the anxiety that Katy feels before shooting the Dweller-in-Darkness. This scene would’ve made the following scene less impactful and wouldn’t have felt as thrilling as we see Katy go through several different emotions before ‘taking the shot’ at the creature.

  • I’m Here

This scene shows the best-friend duo drunk as Katy has an honest talk with Shang-Chi, assuring him that she’ll be there to listen if he even wants to talk about his past. However, we already have enough moments that establish Katy and Shang-Chi’s friendship, so this scene doesn’t affect the story drastically.

  • Just Friends

Shang-Chi & Katy

This scene teases that there might be something more than friendship between Katy and Shang-Chi. Xialing points out to Katy that her brother seems to like her, and Katy hesitates at first but then adds that she doesn’t want to ruin their friendship by making things ‘complicated.’

This scene was better left out because the two characters’ chemistry seems platonic throughout the film. It would be interesting to see if they explore their chances of being a couple in future movies, but for now, Shang-Chi and Katy just seem like best friends.

  • Escape Tunnel

This one is just for laughs as we see Trevor reveal a Shawshank Redemption-esque tunnel in the wall that helps them escape. When asked why he never escaped, he answers, “Turns out I needed your father as much as he needed me.” Katy explains why his logic is flawed and points out he’s still a prisoner.

Trevor

The CGI in all of these scenes is still rough, and the DVD version might probably have the finished version. So if you want to see Razor-Fist’s corpse get impaled by the dark creatures, go ahead and order the Blu-Ray.
