Severance Season 2 Info: Release Date, Cast, Plot and Latest Updates

Severance season 2 may be the most hotly anticipated release on the Apple TV Plus slate, especially as it’s been nearly two years since we first clocked on at the defiantly unconventional Lumon Industries.

Writer and actor strikes interrupted production last year, but now that Hollywood has returned to work, we’re increasingly optimistic we might return to the office before the end of 2024.

Fortunately, it’s starting to look like a release date is imminent, as Apple TV recently began dropping hints that more Severance is on the way.

Let’s get into details to know everything about Season 2.

1. Is there a release date for Severance Season 2?

Severance Season 2 is expected to premiere sometime in 2024. However, there is no specific date as of now.

But don’t be disappointed!! In an announcement video, the streaming platform said Season 2 will make you feel “like you never left.”

According to an April 28, 2023 report, the second season could be delayed due to a “falling out” between showrunners Dan Erickson and Mark Friedman. The report also mentions “extensive script rewrites” and astronomical episode costs that could further delay production for Season 2.

On January 2, 2024, the official Apple TV account published a photo (with no caption) of Mark S (Adam Scott) – the cryptic post received over eight million views in under 48 hours.

2. Severance Season 2 cast: Who’s returning, and are there any new characters?

Season 1 left us on the edge of our seats, so it’s safe to assume that all of our favorite cast members from Severance will be returning for Season 2.

That means we can look forward to seeing the whole gang again, including:

  • Adam Scott as Mark S / Mark Scout
  • Zach Cherry as Dylan G / Dylan George
  • Britt Lower as Helly R / Helena Egan
  • John Turturro as Irving B / Irving Bailiff
  • Patricia Arquette as Harmony Cobel
  • Tramell Tillman as Seth Milchick
  • Christopher Walken as Burt G / Burt Goodman
  • Dichen Lachman as Ms. Casey
  • Jen Tullock as Devon Hale
  • Michael Chernus as Ricken HaleIt’s

It’s unclear whether we’ll see Yul Vazquez as Peter “Petey” Kilmer, a former Lumon employee and friend of Mark’s “innie,” given his death in Season 1. If anything, we’d see him in flashbacks as Mark deals with the events of Season 1.

As revealed in The Hollywood Reporter, there will be at least eight new faces joining the Severance season 2 cast in yet-to-be-revealed roles:

  • Gwendoline Christie (The Sandman, Game of Thrones, Wednesday)
  • Bob Balaban (Gosford Park, The Grand Budapest Hotel)
  • Robby Benson (Beauty and the Beast)
  • Stefano Carannante (Miribilia)
  • John Noble (Fringe, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King)
  • Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (The Tourist, Trapped)
  • Alia Shawkat (Arrested Development, Search Party, The Old Man)
  • Merritt Wever (Nurse Jackie, New Girl)

3. Upcoming Plot for Severance Season 2

While little is known about the plot for Season 2, creator Dan Erickson did tease a deeper dive into the show’s characters. Via Entertainment Weekly:

“In season 2, we will show all these people on the outside. Similar to Mark, they each had their reason for getting this procedure, and they’re all at some stage of a healing process for one thing or another. I can’t wait, because these actors are so good.

And being able to take what Adam did in the first season — with the differentiation between his innie and outie, and how they feel like the same person but with this vastly different lived experience — seeing the other three characters’ version of that dichotomy is, I think, the most exciting part. In season 2, we will expand and get into all of that.”

4. A rundown of Severance season 1 for the uninitiated!

Severance follows Mark, a Lumon Industries employee in the Macrodata Refinement division. Following the death of his wife Gemma, he opts into the titular severance program, meaning his perception of existence is split into two: his “innie” only knows a working life with his colleagues

At the same time, his “outie” doesn’t remember anything to do with work.

He works alongside Dylan, Irving, and “Helly R”, the latter of whom is a new employee who particularly struggles with the adjustment, even trying to kill herself: only for her “outie” to reject her resignation request, essentially imprisoning her.

Season 1 ended with one of the most dramatic cliffhangers of the past 10 years: Helly R discovered she’s Helena Eagan, the Lumon heir; Irving arrived at Burt’s door after their romantic connection in Lumon, only to discover he’s already in a relationship; and we last saw Dylan being tackled to the ground by Milchick after allowing the “innies” to escape their bodies for a brief time.

According to Erickson, this venturing into the outside world will have consequences in the plot of Severance Season 2. “There’s going to be some expansion of the world,” he told Esquire.
