The release date for Schmigadoon season 1 has been announced and the first-look photos offer a glimpse of new season.
The musical comedy series premiered on Apple TV+ in 2021, starring Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Kay as Melissa and Josh respectively. The couple goes on a fun trip to mend their failing relationship and end up getting stuck in the titular musical town of Schmigadoon.
Melissa and Josh discover that the fictional town is built like a classical musical, where people break into song and dance at any time. The couple soon figures out that the only way to escape this strange town is to fall in love again.
The first season of the series received immense critical acclaim and was well-loved among viewers. It was renewed for a second season in mid-2022.
Apple TV+ has finally announced the premiere date for Schmigadoon season 2. The second season will premiere on the platform on April 7, 2023. Executive producer and co-creator Cinco Paul also shared exclusive first-look photos from season 2 on his official Twitter account, giving us a glimpse of the new season.
The first-look photos reveal that season 2 will be set in Schmicago, a parody of the musical Chicago instead of the titular town of Schmigadoon. Strong and Key will return as Melissa and Josh in the series.
One photo shows the couple being welcomed in Schmicago, while another shows the two in stylish clothing to fit into the setting. One of the photos also features Titus Borgess, who is all set to make his debut in the series in a stunning black suit.
Dove Cameron seems to be performing a version of the famous “All That Jazz” song from Chicago in one of the photos as well.
Schmigadoon season 1 ended with Melissa and Josh falling in love again (or so they think!). However, when the two try to cross the bridge to go out of the town, they are unable to do so. In the next season, the show will focus on parodying famous musicals from the 1960s and 70s such as Chicago, which is confirmed by the first-look images.
Other than that, it seems like Melissa and Josh will still be trying to figure out a way to go home and why falling in love did not work for them.
The new songs and the updated setting also indicate that cast members from season 1 will be playing new characters in season 2. For example, Cameron played a farmer’s daughter in season 1, but seems to be playing a nightclub singer now.
Schmigadoon is returning on Apple TV+ after a long wait of two years. It will surely be exciting to see how our main couple rekindles their love and figure out a way to go home, while learning more about this mysterious world of music.
