New Episodes of Sandman Might Feature Another Member of the Endless

Neil Gaiman teases that The Sandman’s recently ordered new episodes could feature Delirium, another popular character from Gaiman’s comics. Delirium is another member of the Endless.

The fantasy drama premiered on Netflix in August 2022. It follows Tom Sturridge’s titular character as he escapes a century-long confinement to restore his Kingdom of the Dreaming. The series is based on Neil Gaiman’s comics of the same name. The first season adapted the first two volumes of the comics, Preludes and Nocturnes and The Doll’s House.

The series, developed by David S. Goyer, Allan Heinberg and Gaiman himself, has gained widespread acclaim from fans and critics alike. The audience praised its faithfulness to the original story, performances by the cast and fantastic worldbuilding. Fans have been asking Netflix to renew the series for a second season ever since season 1 premiered on the streaming platform.

Recently, a fan asked Neil Gaiman on Tumblr about any casting updates on The Sandman’s new episodes, after the show’s renewal announcement. Though the renewal was only just confirmed, Gaiman expressed his excitement to cast Delirium for the series, teasing their arrival in upcoming episodes.

In the comics, Delirium is the youngest of the seven Endless beings. She was first introduced in volume IV of the comics, The Sandman: Season of Mists. She has a special ability to change her form based on her emotions, with her pale blue and emerald eyes remaining constant.

She was originally the personification of Delight, but eventually transitioned into her Delirium persona. The reason behind this change remains unclear even to her older brother, Destiny, whom she is considered to be closest with.

Delight’s Transformation to Delirium

Delirium seems to have more prophetic knowledge than her siblings. However, much of what she wishes to share comes too late or seems incoherent.

For much of The Sandman comics, Delirium avoided interaction with her older sibling, Dream. Delirium has always been afraid of Morpheus for various reasons. This ultimately changed during The Sandman: Brief Lives.

In Brief Lives, Morpheus helped Delirium search for their other sibling, Destruction, after he abandoned his realm. Throughout the comics, the two siblings visited a number of acquaintances in search of their lost sibling. Dream is also forced to confront his estranged son during this journey.

Based on Gaiman’s hint about Delirium appearing in the upcoming episodes, it is possible that the show will be adapting the events of Seasons of Mists. Gaiman previously teased that the show could feature a Dream and Lucifer rematch in the future.

Dream and Lucifer

The Lucifer and Dream rematch is a crucial plot point in the comics, which led to the Devil abandoning Hell and heading to Earth. This inspired the spin-off comic book series that formed the source material for another hit Netflix series, Lucifer.

Considering how involved Gaiman has been with the show’s development and casting, we can hope Delirium’s casting will be perfect. Hopefully, Netflix will be releasing the new episodes pretty soon.
