RX 7600S comes close to the RTX 4060 at 80W, but there is a catch

The fight between Nvidia and AMD in the GPU segment has always been close, with Nvidia generally taking the crown. However, AMD has caught up and is pretty close to beating Nvidia.

In their latest review of the ASUS TUF Gaming A16 laptop, Computerbase published the recent benchmarks of AMD’s cut-down Navi 33-based GPU – the Radeon RX 7600S. In the 1080p benchmarks, it was noted that the 76000s is 5% slower than the RTX 4060 Laptop GPU at the same 80W power mark.

The RX 7600S is based on the RDNA3 architecture. It comes packed with 28 Compute Units and 1792 cores. The 7600S also has 8GB of GDDR6 memory, running across a 128-bit wide bus.

The card also has 32MB of Infinity Cache memory. The chip has a peak clock speed of 2.2 GHz and a TGP of 80W.

While the RX 7600S is only lagging by 5%, behind the RTX 4060’s performance. However, the RTX 4060, based on the Ada Lovelace architecture, leaves its competitor in the dust and is twice as fast.

It has to be kept in mind that the comparison isn’t fair. This is because they compared using minimum textures when using the RX 7600S. Such was not the case when the tests were run on the RTX 4060.

Only the 130W RTX 4060 and the RX 7600S have been benchmarked at the same presets. Without minimum textures, at 80W, the RTX 4060 is 9.8% faster than the 7600S, while it is 29.4% faster at 130W.

One of the reasons for the better performance on the RTX 4060 is that the DLSS 3 technology provides better framerates while raytracing is enabled. In contrast, AMD is yet to release its upscaling technology – FSR’s version 3 for raytracing.

The performance drop in the RX 7600S is the 8x PCIe lanes. Another plausible reason is the 8GB VRAM limit that bottlenecks the GPU. The reviewer noted that the RX GPU needs more VRAM to compete with the RTX GPU.

While the 7600S performed great compared to the RTX 3060 based on the Ampere Architecture, it simply could not match Ada Lovelace’s horsepower.

It is expected that the RX 7600S GPU will ship with the Phoenix series APUs that are set to come out this month. The laptops shipping with this combination is expected to be priced lower than the RTX 4060 laptops, which cost around USD 1200.
