Episode 1, titled “Rent-a-Girlfriend,” begins with Kinoshita Kazuya, a 20-year-old college student, living in Tokyo.

He gets dumped by his girlfriend after one month of dating, and to cure his depression, he rents a girlfriend named Chizuru Mizuhara.

They go on about the day as a casual date at the aquarium and end the night walking down the street holding hands, making Kazuya’s heart flutter.

After coming home, he reads the comments about her on the website and finds out all of it was part of her act. Dissatisfied by her act only for her job, he gives a low rating.

II. Second date

He rents her again for a second date to give a piece of his mind. Back at the aquarium, he calls her out on her unauthentic behavior in public, which leads to her burst out at him, revealing her true colors.

In the middle of this, Kazuya gets a call that his grandmother has collapsed and her rushes to the hospital with Chizuru. He introduces her as his girlfriend in front of his family to keep her job’s secrecy.

His grandma thrilled with joy calls on her friends in the hospital, where it turns out Chizuru’s grandma has also been admitted. They keep up the façade in front of the families, and the day ends with them deciding not to meet each other again.

Little do they know gods of shoujo manga has something else planned for them when they run into each other again at their college.

Rent-A-Girlfriend, also known as Kanojo, Okarishimasu, is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Reiji Miyajima.

It has been serialized in Kodansha’s Weekly Shōnen Magazine since July 2017 and has been compiled into fifteen volumes as of June 2020.

The series has been licensed in North America by Kodansha Comics, which released the first volume in English in June 2020. An anime television series adaptation by TMS Entertainment premiered in July 2020 in the Animeism block.
