Extraction, a Netflix original, came out in April 2020 to a lot of love. Now, the movie’s sequel has finally got a release date. That’s right! Extraction 2 will come to Netflix sometime in 2023!
The 2020 film starred Chris Hemsworth and Golshifteh Farahani, who will be reprising their roles in the sequel. Other cast members included David Harbour, Randeep Hooda, Pankaj Tripathi, and Rudhraksh Jaiswal. Sam Hargrave, director of the 2020 action thriller, is also returning for the sequel.
Back from the dead, black ops mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) will return in the sequel to embark on yet another dangerous mission after being reunited with his mercenary partner Nik Khan (Golshifteh Farahani), who still believed Rake was dead.
The 2020 film was heavily praised for its special effects, compelling performances, and intense action sequences. Despite the criticism faced by the movie for its screenplay, the film had acquired enough success for Netflix to greenlight a sequel. Following the release, a sequel was announced in May 2020, and in 2021, a short teaser for the film was released.
Released during Netflix’s Tudum event, the teaser showed the details of Rake’s survival in the previous film, and the minute-long trailer ended with #RakeLives, and a black screen with the words “Extraction 2 coming soon.”
Other footage posted by Hargrave and Hemsworth in 2021 suggested a cold snowy backdrop for Rake’s next mission. Though not much is known, promises have been made. Hargrave has stated that the sequel will “establish the franchise,” and Hemsworth has added that the sequel “will be bigger” than the first film.
According to Collider, the film is scheduled for release on Netflix in 2023, though no exact date has been mentioned. Neither Hargrave nor the Russo Brothers, who have written the story for both films, have commented on any new updates or plot details.
The only update other than the release time frame? Russo Brothers plan to move ahead of the sequel to build a cinematic universe set in the world of Extraction, with a possible spinoff for Randeep Hooda’s Saju in development.
The sequel will be drastically different from the first film, considering the change in tone and pacing, with more action sequences fitted in. Fans can expect the exact release date by the end of the year.
