It was a shocking, dark, and brutal chapter. Denji woke from a week’s slumber and saw Hirofumi in his hospital room. He got desperate to know Nayuta’s whereabouts, but Hirofumi had no answers. 

The shocking part came when Denji’s body parts started getting amputated by some doctors in the Tokyo Devil Detention Center. The pages depicting the dismembering process were brutal, and seeing Denji’s current stage was truly saddening.

A mysterious girl will save Denji in chapter 157 of Chainsaw Man. 

I. Is that Nayuta?

Most probably, it is Nayuta. However, I think it being Asa is the most valid answer here. Nayuta’s fate is still wrapped in mystery, and it is tough to say that she managed to save herself, learn about Denji’s whereabouts, and show up outside the facility in such little time.

Asa must have gotten the information about Denji’s dismembering from somewhere and decided to save him with Yoru’s help. 

However, apart from these two, the possibility of it being Fami can’t be ignored because she needs Chainsaw Man to stop the apocalypse. 

II. What is Happening to Denji?

Well, he turned Chainsaw Man despite getting countless warnings and even hurt some civilians, so maybe the state ordered his body to get dismembered. 

Still, this sudden turn of events seems strange with no pretext or explanation. Is there someone in the government who wants Chainsaw Man removed from the world? A greater conspiracy than it just being about Chainsaw Man hurting civilians.

Chainsaw Man is a valuable asset for Japan against devils, and this sudden order makes no sense. Let’s wait and see whether we are provided with more explanation or if it is as surface level as it looks. 

4. Chapter 156 Recap

Denji wakes up in a hospital with Hirofumi standing in his room. Denji asks him about Nayuta, but Hirofumi has no information about her. Denji gets desperate to meet Nayuta and tries to get off his bed but falls.

Hirofumi tells him that he has been sleeping for an entire week. Denji asks him why he didn’t wake him up. Hirofumi tells him that he told Denji a lot of times that he wouldn’t be able to grant him a normal life if he ever turned into Chainsaw Man.

However, Denji failed, and there is nothing he can do. Hirofumi leaves the room, and Denji falls unconscious again. Outside the room, Fumiko and other devil hunters are waiting for Hirofumi. 

She asks him if they will dismember Denji, and Hirofumi replies positively. Before they do that, Fumiko wants to pluck out hair and nails out of Denji’s body. 

In a dream state, Denji tells Pochita that he has to get up. Pochita asks why, and he replies that he must save Nayuta. Pochita asks him how he will do that without legs.

We see Denji’s body tied to an operation bed and his legs being amputated. Both his legs have been chopped off successfully. One of the operators tells the devil hunter inside the room to stop smoking and exit the room.

The devil hunter refuses as he is tasked to kill the Chainsaw Man if he tries to flee. The operator tells him they are inside Tokyo Devil Detention Center, and no devil has ever escaped the facility since its formation. 

He claims the center is prepared for any contingency, and compromising the facility’s safety would take a war. On the last page, we see the legs of a girl standing in front of the facility (no face revealed).

Chainsaw Man is a manga series by Tatsuki Fujimoto that was serialized from December 2018-2020 and returned in July 2022 with a second part. The series also received an anime series by MAPPA.

The manga’s plot revolves around Denji, an orphaned boy who has to work as a devil hunter to make a living and pay off his father’s debt.

However, his pet devil, Pochita is killed on a mission. Denji wakes up to realize he and Pochita have become a single being, Chainsaw Man. If he does not want to get killed, he has to join the government and continue hunting demons.
