Avatar 2 Will See a More Dangerous Version of Lang’s Quaritch

Stephen Lang, who plays Quaritch in Avatar: The Way of Water, hints that his character will be more dangerous in the sequel as a Recombinant. Avatar: The Way of Water will release in theaters on December 16, 2022.

Quaritch was first introduced in Avatar, where he played a significant role in the war between the RDA and the Na’vi. Working on the side of the RDA, he kept firing at the people of Pandora. He served as a frontline warrior during the RDA attack and a commander to his soldiers.

In the final battle, Quaritch was hit by two arrows in his chest which eventually led to his death. However, Quaritch returns as a Recombinant in The Way of Water. Recombinants are a new version or breed of Na’vi who have the mind and memories of the person implanted in them.

In a conversation with Screenrant, Stephen Lang explains how his character has changed since the first film and what he has learned from the battle between the Na’vi and the RDA.

Lang talks about Quaritch’s excitement in the first film on seeing a Marine using the body of a Na’vi and how he uses this technique in The Way of Water. Read his entire statement below –

Stephen Lang: We try to bring the essence of the Marine; the attitude. It’s funny, and it’s related to the first film when the original Quaritch says, “Ohh, a Marine kind of attitude in a Na’vi body. That’s potent; gives me the goosebumps.” That’s what he says, and that in fact is what happens in this, so it’s wonderful in that sense.

I think that Quaritch realizes the important thing is that you’ve got to go native, because working the way we worked in the first film didn’t bring about good results. It ended up with two big arrows in the chest. So rather than bring that world to me, I think it’s time that we need to bring ourselves to that world and adapt. It’s either adapt or perish, and that’s what we do.

Quaritch’s Recombinant has his mind and memories, so he will surely come back way more dangerous than he was in the previous film. Considering how he was killed in Avatar, Quaritch has a deep-rooted hatred for the Na’vi, especially for Jake and Neytiri.

Quaritch now holds a “marine kind of attitude in a Na’vi body” much like Jake in Avatar. This also means he will not be at a disadvantage while fighting the Na’vi like he was during last time, as he will now be in the body of a Na’vi.

However, Cameron’s interesting way of bringing back Quaritch has another side to it as well. Now that Quaritch has the body of a Na’vi, he may be able to connect to the people of Pandora and understand them better. He might also face trouble coping with his new identity, which will lead to instability.

As a Marine, Quaritch believed in utmost loyalty. Jake broke this code when he chose a species different from his own. Quaritch is now ready to take revenge against those who wronged him, which is most likely why the Sullys are forced to flee their home in The Way of Water.
