Pokemon Sword and Shield Gets The Permit to Subpoena the Identities of Alleged Leakers

Everyone.Hates.Spoilers. The new Pokemon game, Pokemon: Sword & Shield has been one of the most hyped games of the year, bringing along with it a whole new region, a new generation of Pokemon and an animated adaptation dubbed Pokemon: The Series. The game was released in Japan on 15th November 2019 but looks like some Discord and 4Chan users allegedly leaked details regarding the game which have caused an “Irreparable Injury” to The Pokemon Company.

Pokemon filed a lawsuit against the alleged leakers in late November for stealing trade secrets from TPCi(The Pokemon Company International). They recently have been given permission to subpoena the identities of the defendants on the online forums.

The defendants have been accused of leaking pictures of the unseen Gigantamax Forms, announcing new Pokemon and evolutions weeks before the official release date. With the subpoena in TPCi’s hands, Discord and 4Chan have no choice but to reveal the identities of the accused. TPCi has identified 4 potential leakers currently residing in the US by their Discord usernames and hashtags. The users stole trade secrets from TPCi by taking pictures of an unreleased strategy guide. The lawyers claim that the company is “entitled to damages in an amount to be proven at trial.”

Pokemon: Sword & Shield is the fastest-selling games yet released. The game has sold 1.74 million copies as of 24th November, surpassing the 1.66 million Lifetime sales of Let’s go Pikachu and Eevee. It has earned the title of the best selling game of 2019 in Japan, whereas Seikro: Shadows die Twice has won the Game Of The Year award 2019.
