PlayStation 6 is not arriving any time soon, but it can be expected in 2028

Even though it seems like the PlayStation 5 was released quite a while back, it has just been three years since its launch in 2020. The PS5 came seven years after the PS4.

Insider-Gaming’s Tom Henderson has mentioned that he “understands that the next generation of PlayStation – the PS6 – is unlikely to release until at least 2028.”

This might seem like a fair way out, but in truth, it is just 4-5 years away. This release date would make a lot of sense given that there would be a spacing of 7 years between PS5 and PS6, as per Sony’s release trend.

This also corroborates with the document spotted earlier this year, revealing that Sony will not release a new console until 2027.

This can be deduced from the document, which mentions that Sony claims Microsoft had offered to continue making Activision’s games available on the PlayStation only until 2027. It also mentions that by the time Sony releases their next console, it will have lost access to Call of Duty and other Activision titles.

There are also rumors of a PS5 Pro that further refute the viability of releasing a PS6 any time soon. The specs for the PS5 Pro are also being speculated to support ray-tracing.

This is confirmed by a recently published patent by PlayStation architect Mark Cerny that was spotted @Onion0048 on Twitter. Because of the latest patented pipeline, ray tracing performance will be accelerated in future titles.

It is expected that the PS5 Pro will release at some point in 2024/25. This pushes the release date of the PlayStation 6 automatically to 2026 and beyond.

Fans have also had their say in this regard. The PS5 had a sub-par reception at launch primarily because of supply issues and being very hard to procure.

As a result, the game cycles have been delayed, and very few games of good quality for the PS5 have released. It is hoped that this will change in a year or so.

This is why fans are calling for Sony to be patient and not be in a hurry to push out the PlayStation 6, which will reset the cycle and delay good-quality games on the PlayStation by another two years.
