Percy Jackson and the Olympians Episode 6 Ending Explained: Poseidon’s Pearls

Summary

  • Poseidon’s Nereid gives Percy Jackson four pearls, that can be crushed to transport the users to any beach.
  • The pearls are meant to transport Percy, Annabeth, Grover and Sally back to the real world from Hades’ Underworld.

With only two episodes left before the season finale, the iconic trio must give it their all to stop the apocalyptic war between Zeus and Poseidon. The fateful summer solstice deadline has passed, and the quest looks more difficult than ever before for the heroes.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 6 ends with Percy receiving some Poseidon’s pearls from a Nereid, but will they be helpful in his quest?

Readers of the canon books might spot that the summer solstice deadline is not reached in the books at this point. However, this is an interesting change in the series with some apparent positives.

Firstly, it accentuates Percy’s toughness because he’s willing to continue the quest despite it officially failing. Secondly, it introduces a heightened tension and dilemma in the viewers’ hearts.

Finally, it provides something new for the ardent canon readers who are already well accustomed to the plot.

Moreover, this uncertainty makes every new gift given to Percy crucial to the climax, especially the Poseidon pearls given by his father.

At the end of episode 6, Percy goes underwater to meet his father, Poseidon. However, he doesn’t get to because the God of water is busy preparing for the war against Zeus.

However, a nereid greets him and instructs him to go back to Camp Half-Blood. However, Percy is insistent on continuing with his quest.

That is when she gives him four pears of Poseidon, the fourth being for his mother.

“Save the world, and then go save your mother,” she says as Percy bids adieu to the Underworld.

The concept of the pearls is pretty straightforward. The Nereid tells Percy that anything from the sea can easily return if they wish to. Basically, these pearls allow the users to respawn on a beach if they are crushed beneath their feet.

Percy will use these pearls to escape the Underworld. Moreover, the Nereid gives him the fourth one to save his mother, Sally, from the clutches of Hades.

This means that Annabeth, Percy, Grover, and Sally only need to crush the pearl beneath their feet, and they can return to the sea instantly.

Interestingly, the 2010 Percy Jackson film (Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief) completely changed the plot of Poseidon’s Pearls.

In that film, Poseidon’s pearls were called Persephone’s pearls, and Luke informed the titular hero about them.

The makers made this change so that finding those pearls could be one of the film’s major plots. The story featured the iconic trio visiting various places to obtain the pearls so that they could use them to return from the Underworld.

However, Percy Jackson and the Olympians episode 6 is faithful to the book’s actual plot, where Poseidon gives those stones to Percy.
