Bong Joon-Ho, the Oscar-winning director and co-writer of the film Parasite, revealed during the Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2024 ceremony that he is planning an animation project in Japan.

Bong Joon-Ho announced this exciting news before presenting the Best Director Award to Shōta Goshozono of Jujutsu Kaisen fame. The South Korean filmmaker reported spending the whole day before the ceremony in his hotel room, drawing storyboards for the project.

Previously, during this month, Bong Joon-Ho revealed his plans for an upcoming animated feature film in South Korea.

He had begun working on the script for this new feature back in 2018, and the film will begin production in the second half of the year. According to CartoonBrew, the film’s story will focus on the “relationship between humankind and marine life.”

Now, it isn’t clear if the Japanese animation project is related to the previously announced feature film or a separate project. The master director did not specify which studio or studios would work on the planned project in Japan.

But fans have been hoping for him to collaborate with MAPPA or Studio Bones and create something spectacular. It will be interesting to see what the director comes up with.
