It has been officially announced that the 2023 Star Trek lineup on Paramount+ is confirmed, after the release window for Star Trek: Lower Decks season 4 and Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 were revealed.
Mike McMahan, the creator of Star Trek: Lower Decks, has successfully won over fans for three seasons by combining ribald humor with a respectful treatment of the franchise. On the other hand, Star Trek: Prodigy has received praise for excitingly introducing the values of Starfleet to a new generation of fans, while still satisfying long-time viewers.
According to an official announcement on the Star Trek Paramount+ Twitter account, the premiere dates for two animated Star Trek series, Lower Decks and Prodigy, have been confirmed, along with the premiere date for the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
Lower Decks season 4 is set to premiere in “late summer 2023,” and it has already been renewed for a fifth season. Additionally, Prodigy season 2 is expected to arrive “this winter.”

Despite initial skepticism, both Star Trek: Lower Decks and Star Trek: Prodigy have proven to be essential components of Paramount+’s Star Trek offerings. Lower Decks season 4 will consist of the same number of episodes, 10, as in previous seasons, and the animated comedy follows the format of its predecessor, Star Trek: The Next Generation, with individual episodes that also contribute to a larger storyline.
In addition, the show’s creator, Mike McMahan, recently tweeted that “season 5 is being written now!”, indicating that fans can expect to see more of the entertaining misadventures of the USS Cerritos.
Star Trek: Prodigy season 1, a 20-episode adventure that involved time travel and six teenage aliens who saved the galaxy aboard the USS Protostar, was the brainchild of Kevin and Dan Hageman. The show, which was a collaborative effort between Nickelodeon and Paramount+, also saw the return of Admiral Kathryn Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) from Star Trek: Voyager to the canon.
In season 2, Janeway will personally mentor the kids. It remains unclear whether season 2, which is also expected to consist of 20 episodes, will be split into two halves as season 1 was. The fact that Paramount+ has not yet announced season 3 of Star Trek: Prodigy is intriguing.
In a delightful turn of events, it was revealed that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 will premiere on June 15, 2023, and the prequel series has been officially renewed for season 3, which is currently in production.
These premiere announcements for Star Trek come just a few days ahead of First Contact Day on April 5, 2023. With Star Trek: Picard season 3 drawing to a close and Star Trek: Discovery season 5 being confirmed as its final season in 2024, it’s reassuring to know that Paramount+ has unveiled its plans for its remaining shows in 2023.
