One Piece Reveals The Fate of Suke Suke no Mi

One of the things that set One Piece apart from other anime is the way Eiichiro Oda, creator of the series, handles world-building.

The viewer not only knows what the protagonist of the series is up to but also knows how vital figures in the One Piece world, i.e., the Gorosei, Admirals, Yonkous, etc. react to the events and take initiatives of their own.

Episode 917, titled “The Holy Land in Tumult – The Yonko Blackbeard Laughs Boldly”, shows Blackbeard after a long and reveals that Shiryu of the Rain is now the possessor of the Suke Suke no Mi (Invisibility Devil Fruit).

The episode shows Blackbeard on a Skull-shaped island with his crew when Gekko Moria, former Warlord, approaches him. Turns out, Absalom has gone missing and has suffered a terrible fate by the hands of the Yonko, Marshall D. Teach. In his hunt for strong devil fruits, Blackbeard targeted the Suke Suke no Mi (Invisibility Devil Fruit). He stole its powers from Absalom, just like he stole the Gura Gura no Mi (Shake Devil Fruit) from Whitebeard during the War of the Best.

The new possessor of the Suke Suke no Mi is Shiryu of the Rain, one of Blackbeard’s captains. Shiryu of the Rain was introduced in Impel Down as a former Marine who decided to join Blackbeard. The limit of his skill with the blade is not yet clear, but with a new devil fruit in his hands, Shiryu gets a considerable power-up.

This affects the story in 2 major ways:

1. There was a theory floating around that said that since Blackbeard was hunting down remnants of the Whitebeard Pirates, he would steal the Kira Kira no Mi (Diamond Devil Fruit) from Jozu and give it to Shiryu. Shiryu would then use this power to take down Mihawk since diamonds are the hardest thing to cut and take the title of the world’s greatest swordsman.

Thus, Shiryu’s match-up in the final battle between the Blackbeard and Strawhat Pirates would be with Zoro, and he would have to cut diamond to claim the title of the world’s greatest swordsman and fulfill his promise to Kuina. But that theory has now gone down the drain due to this revelation.

2. During the Thriller Bark arc, Sanji reveals that he had been dreaming of spying on girls in the shower and wanted the Suke Suke no Mi since he was a kid. This made Absalom a direct rival of Sanji during the arc, and now that Shiryu has this fruit, his match-up should be Sanji in the final battle.

Regardless of how this affects the story, Blackbeard pirates getting simultaneous upgrades with the Strawhats gives the story a better feel and makes us look forward to the final battle even more.

About One Piece:

The man who had acquired everything in this world, the Pirate King, is Gol D. Roger. The final words he said at the execution tower were “My treasures? If you want it, I’ll let you have it. Look for it; I left all of it at that place.” These words sent many to the seas, chasing their dreams, headed toward the Grand Line, in search of One Piece. Thus began a new age!

Seeking to be the greatest pirate in the world, young Monkey D. Luffy also heads toward the Grand Line in search of One Piece. With his diverse crew joining him along the way, consisting of a swordsman, marksman, navigator, cook, doctor, archaeologist, and cyborg-shipwright, this will be one memorable adventure.
