One Piece Chapter 988: Release Date, Delay, Read Online

The adventures of Monkey D. Luffy and his crew in search of the legendary treasure – One Piece, have been serializing chapters for over two decades.

This 900+ chapter series is often regarded as the King of Manga because of it being the highest-grossing manga for a decade.

One Piece released chapter 987 on Monday, titled “Vassals of Glory.” So, it’s time to discuss the release date, scans, and other details for chapter 988.

1. Chapter 988 Release Date & Highlights

Chapter 988 of the One Piece manga will be released on Sunday, August 23, 9:30 am PDT. The title for the upcoming chapter has not yet been released.

In the next chapter, we will be shown the highly anticipated sulong form of Nekomamushi!! Kaido will face off against the Red Scabbards along with a whole bunch of sulong form minks.

One Piece manga is published under Shonen Jump magazine, which is a weekly magazine that comes out every Sunday.

2. Is One Piece on a Break this Week?

Chapter 988 of the One Piece manga was on a break last week but it will be released this week. While no official statement was released, it is likely that the break was due to Oda needing some time to rest.

3. Chapter 988 Speculations/Predictions

Chapter 987 officially kicked off the war on Onigashima. With the declaration of an all out war against Kaido, Big Mom, and Orochi, Luffy drew a lot of attention to himself.

Since there is a lot going on at the same time, it is more than likely that we will see parallel storylines instead of just one.

I. Sulong Form Minks

The Mink tribe’s dreaded Sulong form was first hinted to us during the Zou arc and we saw it in action for the first time during the Whole Cake Island arc. This form seemed overpowered, as someone like Carrot, who is relatively weak, became so powerful that she was able to take down dozens of ships by herself.

Chapter 987 ended with Nekomamushi pointing out that the full moon is visible. We will definitely see the devastating power of the Sulong form of Nekomamushi & Inuarashi in the coming chapters.

II. Kaido’s Family

Yamato’s face was seen for the first time in chapter 984. He claims to be Luffy’s ally and he says that he has waited for Luffy “all this time”.

We also found out that Yamato has been imprisoned on Onigashima by his father – Kaido, due to his strong admiration for Kozuki Oden.

There is definitely more to Kaido’s past with Yamato and bits and pieces of information will surely be scattered throughout the Wano arc in relation to it.

III. Momonosuke’s Execution

Momonosuke is currently about to be executed in the Performance Floor of Onigashima’s Skull Dome.

Nami and her group have already reached the platform after being chased by Big Mom. Robin, Jinbei & many other members of the Rebellion Army are present as well.

Now that a full on war has broken out, someone from Kaido’s crew will likely take Momonosuke hostage to threaten the rebellion forces.

This may lead up to yet another character development moment for Momonosuke.

4. Chapter 988 Raw Scans, Leaks & Spoilers

Raw scans for the Chapter 988 of the One Piece manga were recently released.

The upcoming chapter, titled “Sorry for the Wait!,” begins with Kaido’s confrontation with the Akazaya Nine on the roof of Onigashima’s Skull Dome. Before they can fight, Jack comes in along with some of Kaido’s forces (including Number 7). This distracts Inuarashi and Nekomamushi, however the other minks urge them to leave Jack and the others to them.

Roddy & Blackback go sulong form, followed by Shishilian, Giovanni & Concelot.

The scene shifts to the execution platform, where Shinobu tries to sneak in and free Momonosuke using her devil fruit power. However, she is spotted by King and is smashed into a building. Momonosuke’s chains rot away and he begins flying midair. King grabs hold of him and turns out that Sanji was using his raid suit to save Momonosuke. Sanji throws him to Shinobu and gets into a fight with King.

Luffy tries to go and fight Kaido, but is stopped by Big Mom, who attacks him with Elbaf no Yari: Ikoku. Luffy dodges it, and the attack goes on to punch a whole in the entire structure.

Nami steals Zeus back, for like a second, before Big Mom takes him back and orders Zeus to shock them. In a shocking turn of events (pun intended), Franky slams the Kurosai motorbike on Big Mom’s face while Brook slices Zeus in half.

6. Chapter 987 Plot

The chapter shows the beginning of a full scale war between the alliance of two Yonko and the rebellion army fighting for Wano’s dawn.

The chapter starts with Kaido having a flashback about Oden’s final words – “Don’t underestimate Wano’s samurai,” as he falls off the execution platform.

The attacks from the Red Scabbards fail to pierce him at first, but after a sudden influx of Ryou, the scabbards manage to stab Kaido’s torso & hand. This makes Kaido scream in pain which shocks many of his underlings.

After Kaido falls to the ground along with the Red Scabbards, Yamato makes his way to attack him. However, he is stopped by Ulti. Yamato announces that he is no longer an ally to the Beast Pirates.

Big Mom, who is just watching from the sidelines, asks Luffy if he is here to defeat Kaido. Luffy replies by saying that he is here to take them all down – Kaido, Big Mom & Orochi. This is an all out war!

Meanwhile, Nami & Carrot break free from Big Mom’s homies. We also see that a war has broken out between the rebellion army and the Beast Pirates.

Kid, Zoro & Law can be seen taking out dozens of Kaido’s men. At the end of this segment, Marco is seen alongside Perospero, who has allied with his cause for the moment.

In response to Luffy’s declaration of war, Kaido says that he will show them the true power of the World’s Strongest Creature.

In an epic scene, Kaido transforms into his dragon form and flies up to the roof with the Red Scabbards clinging to his body. Luffy tells Kin’emon that he will catch up soon.

The chapter ends with Kaido facing off against the Red Scabbards as Nekomamushi points out that the full moon is visible!!!

Apart from the main storyline in the manga chapters, One Piece also advances the storyline by featuring scenes around the world in the form of cover stories.

Chapter 987’s cover takes a break from Gang Bege’s OH MY FAMILY cover story. The chapter contains a beautiful color spread showcasing the Strawhats riding a giant bulldog along with 4 smaller bulldogs.

There are a lot of references in this color spread, the most obvious one being the color scheme of the bulldogs.

It is a reference to the Admirals – Kuzan, Borsalino, Fujitora and Akainu. The fact that they are “bull”dogs also points to the latest Admiral Green Bull!
