This 900+ chapter series is often regarded as the King of Manga because of it being the highest-grossing manga for a decade.
One Piece released chapter 985 on Monday, titled “New Onigashima Project.” So, it’s time to discuss the release date, scans, and other details for chapter 986.
1. Chapter 986 Raw Scans, Leaks & Spoilers
Raw scans for the Chapter 986 of the One Piece manga were released recently.
The upcoming chapter takes a very surprising turn. It starts off with all of the Red Scabbards reuniting at the back entrance of Onigashima. We see Kanjuro laying on the ground with blood around his body as the Red Scabbards enter the castle.
Orochi’s subordinates quickly switch their allegiance to Kaido, afraid of the power they have to face otherwise. Kaido asks Momonosuke about his identity as he cannot believe that this is the same boy from 20 years ago.
Luffy breaks open Yamato’s handcuffs and throws them aside incase they explode.
Back at the stage, Momonosuke says that he is Kozuki Momonosuke, son of Kozuki Oden and the rightful Shogun of Wano. As Kaido is about to execute Momo, Yamato’s cuffs blow up and cause a massive explosion. Seeing the size of the explosion, Yamato says that Kaido is no longer his father.
The Red Scabbards enter the Performance Floor. Izo shoots King’s sword off his hand, and the others charge at Kaido as they yell “Sunacchi” (a samurai call to calm one’s heart in front of a great danger).
In an epic spread, we see Kawamatsu block, King, while Inuarashi blocks Queen & Jack. Nekomamushi is stopped mid-air by Kaido’s hand. Kin’emon and Denjiro are the only ones who actually reach Kaido. The chapter ends as Kaido & the Red Scabbards fall off the stage.
2. Chapter 986 Speculations/Predictions
Chapter 985 showed a major revelation – Kaido’s new plan to use Wano as a natural fortress for waging war against the entire world. This has massive implications to the storyline and will certainly define the next few years of the series.
I. Ace’s Flashback
During the Paramount War, we found out that Ace had been to Wano. During the first act of Wano, we found out that Tama had met Ace during his stay in Wano. And now, we find out that Kaido’s “Son” had also been in contact with Ace.
This could be a great time to switch into flashback mode and watch Yamato narrate Ace’s visit to Wano for Luffy. This will shed some light on their relationship, and the reason why Whitebeard hadn’t helped Oden during the turmoil in Wano.
II. Kaido’s Family
Yamato’s face was seen for the first time in chapter 984. He claims to be Luffy’s ally and he says that he has waited for Luffy “all this time”. We also found out that Yamato has been imprisoned on Onigashima by his father – Kaido, due to his strong admiration for Kozuki Oden.
There is definitely more to Kaido’s past with Yamato and bits and pieces of information will surely be scattered throughout the Wano arc in relation to it.
III. Momonosuke’s Execution
Momonosuke is currently about to be executed in the Performance Floor of Onigashima’s Skull Dome. Nami and her group have already reached the platform after being chased by Big Mom.
Robin, Jinbei & many other members of the Rebellion Army are present as well. Now that Luffy has also found his way to the Performance Floor, a big fight will probably break out soon.
IV. Orochi Dethroned?
Kurozumi Orochi, the Shogun of Wano, was decapitated by Kaido in chapter 985. This came as a big shock to Orochi’s followers as he had been Kaido’s ally for over two decades.
Even though it is highly unlikely that Orochi actually died, it is possible that all of his followers will submit to Kaido. This will make Kaido’s plans much smoother as Wano’s samurai are a force to be reckoned with.
V. The Biggest War the World Has Ever Seen
When Kaido was first introduced, he mentioned that he is eager to start “the biggest war the world has ever seen.” This tied back to chapter 985 when Kaido announced that he will wage war on the entire world with the help of Big Mom & the Ancient Weapons.
Kaido & Big Mom’s combined new ambition will surely shape the entirety of the future of the series.
3. Chapter 986 Release Date & Highlights
Chapter 986 of the One Piece manga will be released on Sunday, August 2, at 9:30 am PDT. The title for the upcoming chapter has not yet been released.
In the next chapter, we will be shown the reaction of everyone as they find out about Kaido’s plan. Momo’s execution will begin shortly, which will inevitably draw the Rebellion Army to the Performance Floor.

4. Is One Piece On A Break This Week?
Chapter 986 of the One Piece manga is on not a break this week. It was, however, on a break last week. Unlike usual breaks, which are due to Oda’s health issues, the series is on hiatus because of Shonen Jump’s schedule.

The chapter starts with members of the Akazya Nine (along with Izo) being confronted by Kanjuro (along with some of Kaido’s army) at the back entrance of Onigashima.
Kanjuro explains to them that Momonosuke is about to be executed and tells them how he beat Momonosuke bloody when he tried to escape. This riles up Kikunojo, who gets into a fight with Kanjuro.
In the attic space, we see Yamato explaining his situation to Luffy. Apparently, Yamato has been imprisoned on Onigashima since the age of 8. He wanted to leave with Ace, but couldn’t, so he wants Luffy to take him to sea.
Kaido & Big Mom finally reach the Performance Floor and broadcast their announcement throughout Onigashima.
Using the alliance with the Big Mom Pirates, Kaido plans to take control of the ancient weapons & claim the One Piece. With the weapons & the One Piece, he wants to start the biggest war the world has ever seen.
Kaido plans to move Onigashima’s operations to the Flower Capital & remake Wano into the New Onigashima. Wano’s natural defenses will be of great help to fight against the World Government.
Orochi refuses to let his territory go, and Kaido cuts his head down with King’s sword. Orochi’s men are then given a choice – die in battle right now, or join the pirate alliance to rule the world.
The chapter ends with Luffy & Yamato accidentally dropping down from the attic space and running for their lives.

Apart from the main storyline in the manga chapters, One Piece also advances the storyline by featuring scenes around the world in the form of cover stories.
Chapter 985’s cover takes a break from Gang Bege’s OH MY FAMILY cover story. The chapter contains a beautiful color spread showcasing Luffy, Kid & Law riding two birds. It perfectly captures the interactions between the three Supernovas.
