The Wire Actor Michael K Williams Found Dead At Home Aged 54

Michael K. Williams, globally recognized as Omar Little from The Wire, has died aged 54.

The five-time Emmy nominee actor was a powerhouse of talent who took part in multiple acclaimed HBO shows like Boardwalk Empire, Lovecraft Country, and even Hap and Leonard.

Williams’ representative, Marianna Shafran, informed The Hollywood Reporter about this “insurmountable loss.” She stated,

It is with deep sorrow that the family announces the passing of Emmy-nominated actor Michael Kenneth Williams. They ask for your privacy while grieving this insurmountable loss.

Williams was found dead on Monday at his NYC residence, confirmed Variety with The New York Police Department. The cause of death is yet to be decided. However, some sources are saying he died from a suspected drug overdose.

The actor pulled off a notorious stick-up Baltimore guy in the crime drama, The Wire, which aired from 2002 to 2008. After his breakthrough in The Wire, he showcased his prowess in multiple movies and dramas.

Williams received another Emmy nomination this year for his Boardwalk Empire character called Albert ‘Chalky’ White.

People across the world poured in their condolences as they praised the actor for his limitless talent. HBO Network released a statement saying,

We are devastated to learn of the passing of Michael Kenneth Williams, a member of the HBO family for more than 20 years. While the world is aware of his immense talents as an artist, we knew Michael as a dear friend who was beloved by all who had the privilege to work with him. We send our deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss.

Travon Free, a famous comedian, called Williams a “God damn genius” and “a black queer icon who challenged the ideas of black masculinity at a time when it wasn’t easy and a truly great dude.” He also shared that his death is a huge loss.

Williams’ co-actor in The Wire, Isiah Whitlock Jr., also described Williams as “an amazing actor and soul.”    

The Wire writer, David Simon, also expressed his grief and called the actor “a rare talent.”

Along with acting and being great at it, Williams also worked on a project that focused on smoothing former inmates’ journey as they re-enter society with a New Jersey charity.
