No Time To Die Director Explains the Ending Scene’s Importance

No Time To Die’s director Cary Joji Fukunaga explained the hard-hitting ending scene that tied all the loose ends of Daniel Craig’s James Bond like a gift wrapper.

Craig’s last stint as James Bond in No Time To Die left many teary-eyed. The movie was a fitting end to his journey as the British spy for 15 long years, and it did not disappoint.

The goose-bump moment of Bond sacrificing his life for his love Madeleine (Léa Seydoux) and their daughter Mathilde was remarkable, despite predictable.

Director Fukunaga shared that the ending scene – Madeleine and Mathilde driving through a tunnel symbolizing 007’s gun barrel as We Have All The Time In The World plays – felt like a proper closure to Craig’s James Bond story.

It felt like closure, like closing off the past, and closing off the story. It’s that last sentence in a paragraph in the last chapter of a book, just to try to make it feel satisfying.

The scene was the peak of James Bond’s arc over 15 years. It was also the first time a child, Bond’s daughter Mathilde, was at the center of the story, making his sacrifice feel natural.

Giving Craig’s Bond a complete story arc with a necessary sacrifice made No Time To Die possibly the best James Bond movie in cinematic history.

Fukunaga also shared that he was “struggling” to make a plausible scenario that would lead to the character’s demise – also the first one in the history of James Bond.

I was really struggling, because it couldn’t be conventional action. It couldn’t just be a demonic device, it had to be tied into the central theme of the story.

The premise of a vicious villain Lyutsifer Safin, who was brought to life by Rami Malek’s chilling acting, on a quest for revenge, sealed the deal. In the final fight with Bond, he smashed a vial of the DNA-virus Heracles on his face.

The virus was specially coded for the Swanns – Madeleine and Mathilde – which meant they would die if Bond ever touched them. Hence it gave Bond a perfect way to opt for a suicide mission.
