Nintendo Switch successor to release soon after the announcement

Nintendo’s figures for the Fiscal year ending March 2023 were recently released online. In a questionnaire, the company’s President – Shuntaro Furukawa, discussed the time lapse between the Nintendo Switch’s announcement and its release.

Mentioned initially under the codename “NX” when in development in March 2015, the official name was unveiled only in October 2016 ahead of its March 2017 launch. On being pointed out the time delay, the President said they had to let people know their sole focus was on the videogame business platform, citing the Switch release time as a particular case.

This means that the successor to the Switch might not be announced two years before its release. While very little is known about the upcoming console by Nintendo, an interesting comment was made by Furukawa.

When pointed out that even after eight years, the number of Nintendo Switch players continues to grow, Furukawa mentioned that it’s against their beliefs to think that “reaching a certain number of annual playing users means that there is no need to release a next-generation platform.”

Without citing anything specific, he mentioned that they are “always working on various projects aimed at the future” to bring new and unique entertainment to the players.

He also mentioned that in the future, even when they release a next-gen console, they’ll have to maintain and extend support for the Switch to help a smooth transition.

When asked about the decrease in production costs due to decreased hardware costs, it was mentioned that inflation and foreign exchange rates are allowing Nintendo to keep the prices stable.

This is because production was highly impacted in the previous fiscal year. Even if the raw materials see a decrease in prices, it might not translate to a decrease in manufacturing costs.

While closing, Furukawa also mentioned that they would provide information about hardware and software at the “appropriate time” for each product and strive to reach a wide range of consumers in the future.
