Pirates of the Caribbean’s newest installment is underway as the film’s producer Jerry Bruckheimer reveals that Ted Elliott, one of the writers who was previously involved in two of the franchise’s films, will be returning to write the new movie in the franchise.
The franchise first premiered in theaters in July 2003 with Pirates of the Caribbean and was a hit at the box office with above $650 million made in its theatrical run. The film starred Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow, Orlando Bloom as William Turner, Kiera Knightley as Elizabeth Swann, and Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa.
The box office success and flood of positive reviews surrounding fans’ love for Jack Sparrow led to two other sequels shot back-to-back and released in 2006 and 2007, respectively.
The 2006 film Dead Man’s Chest and the 2007 film At World’s End did not do well according to critics, but the two sequels even outdid the first film at the box office, paving the way for two more films, the 2011 film On Stranger Tides and the 2017 film Dead Men Tell No Tales.
The new film in development has had few updates in the five years following the last film’s release. This latest update comes from producer Jerry Bruckheimer stating the return of Ted Elliot, who had previously written the first and fourth films of the franchise.
In an interview with ComicBook, Bruckheimer revealed Elliot is back on the writing team but did not disclose any other information about the story for the upcoming film except that it was in the writing process.
We’re just working on the screenplay. One of the original writers, Ted Elliott, is helping write it. He has a great command of the characters.
Hints for the return of Knightley’s Elizabeth Swann and Bloom’s Will Turner in the new film have been dropped, along with a possible return for Bill Nighy’s Davy Jones. But this hopeful news comes with a tragic subtraction from the beloved cast.
Following Disney’s decision to drop Johnny Depp from the upcoming sixth installment during his court case with ex-wife Amber Heard, Depp has made his intentions clear about not returning to the franchise, even if the studio offered him $300 million.
Depp’s missing involvement has put a wrench in the film’s development, but for now, Bruckheimer has confirmed that they are moving forward. More information will come to light as the process moves along.
