Go, Joe! G.I. Joe Producer Confirms New Movie Is in Development

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is due in theaters this year, and its cast and crew are marketing by talking it up. I’m not here to do that, though! In a recent interview about the aforementioned film, producer Lorenzo Di Bonaventura spoke about another popular action figure turned film hero.

Speaking to Collider, Bonaventura stuck up a conversation about G.I Joe and his film franchise, confirming a fourth instalment is in the works. There have been rumors of a specific film, G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant, being under development, but the producer didn’t confirm whether this is the new film they are working on.

Nevertheless, this is good news for fans of the Real American Hero! The producer claims it’s “impossible to say” when to expect the latest G.I. Joe film, but “there’s a lot going on right now.” Read his full statement below:

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

We actually developed a pilot with Amazon. This was before Paramount+, just as Paramount+ was coming in. It didn’t pan out. We are in a lot of conversations about what to do with it as a film, and so I would have to say, most likely, you’re going to see that come to fruition. How soon is always impossible to say. For a long time, there were no active conversations. There’s a lot going on right now.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra kickstarted the film series in 2009, starring Channing Tatum and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Inspired by the popular toy line, the action film enjoyed a comfortable run at the box office, earning over $300 million.

The 2013 sequel, G.I. Joe: Retaliation, reached the same level of success during its theatrical run, but the same can’t be said for the 2021 prequel. Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins scored a measly $40 million at the box office, though it was the only one to score a fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes despite its low profits due to COVID-19.

Though the previous movies have run successfully in one way or another, franchise stars Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson haven’t shown any interest in reviving their roles. Tatum even said he wished they’d kill off his character to avoid returning!
