Netflix Joins the Trend of Scrapping Creatives by Dumping Two Movies

The Hollywood streaming content scrapping fiasco has two new victims, this time from Netflix. The streaming giant is now planning to offload two finished movies from the platform. They are The Inheritance and House/ Wife.

Directed by Alejandro Brugues, The Inheritance is currently in post-production and stars Peyton List, Bob Gunton, Rachel Nichols, and Austin Stromwell. Danis Goulet directs the other film, House/Wife.

A recent report claims that Netflix is scrapping content pre-release because it wants to maintain the same level of content spending as last year, which was $17 billion.

This move is also somehow connected with the fact that Netflix wants to focus on profits from its massive 230 million subscribers globally. Last week, Netflix reported a huge increase of nearly 8 million subscribers after introducing its new ad tier plan.

It is currently unknown why Netflix is suddenly scrapping two almost-finished movies, but it has been a relatively common occurrence of late. The streamer’s content-cutting drama was limited to dumping new seasons of web series before, but now it is slowly expanding to feature films.

Netflix is generally very conservative with its original film slate, but it still has deals with several high-profile actors for its upcoming originals. Jennifer Aniston’s upcoming Murder Mystery 2 and Chris Hemsworth’s highly anticipated Extraction sequel are prime examples of that. Only time will tell whether they also run the risk of getting scrapped at the last moment.

The company has made big money from its recent monetary ventures. They paid generously to buy the film Fair Play, which was one of the most talked about entries in the Sundance Film Festival.

The company’s financial success, combined with its willingness to invest in new projects, makes the scrapping of the two films very confusing. Both films were neither expensive projects nor did they have an extravagant cast.

The films aren’t completely ruined, though. Netflix reportedly plans on selling them to other streamers.

What triggered the trend of cancelling completed movies?

Batgirl

It all started with Batgirl. Warner Bros Discovery’s scrapping of the completed film was due to tax complexities, but it created an avalanche of cancellations by various streaming platforms.

AMC recently canceled 61st Street and Invitation to a Bonfire Series. These movies, like The Inheritance and House/Wife, were also on the verge of completion.

With almost every streaming giant canceling one show or the other quite frequently, it seems Hollywood will go through a recession very soon.
