Mythic Quest is one of Apple TV’s best sitcoms, following the dysfunctional MQ headquarters led by video game creator Ian Grimm and his head engineer-turned-director, Poppy Li.
Although the show focuses a fair share on all the other characters, Ian and Poppy are usually in the spotlight. To the office employees, they’re also known as the “Mom” and “Dad” of the company—making fans wonder whether the two might end up dating.
Well, Poppy and Ian won’t have a romantic relationship in Mythic Quest. Co-creator and lead actor Rob Mcelhenney has clarified the same, citing their age difference as one of the biggest factors—Ian is 20 years older than Poppy.
Talking to Decider, McElhenney commented that a romantic relationship between Mythic Quest’s lead characters was never in the works. He commented that the age gap would be too “creepy, although that hasn’t stopped Hollywood before.”
In the same interview, co-creator Megan Ganz also reflects the audience’s sentiments, saying that despite McElhenney’s restrictions, some fans will inevitably ship the two and hope that they do end up getting together.
Fans shipping Ian and Poppy is understandable—between Seasons 1 and 2, there were quite a few emotional beats that led to both Ian and Poppy opening up to each other, being vulnerable, and wholeheartedly showing their support for each other.
(Not to forget, Poppy even had a sex dream about Ian. But it turned out that all of the MQ employees had similar dreams about their favorite self-obsessed boss.)
Now, in Season 3, Ian decides to trust Poppy’s gut, leave Mythic Quest, and build a new video game and company from scratch.
The dynamics the two have, even with the countless, endless times they fight and yell at each other, are actually quite endearing. Beneath the megalomania, Ian and Poppy care for each other deeply.
When you see two characters on the screen a lot (especially if they’re the show’s main characters), you can’t help but ship them. However, it’s better to look at Ian and Poppy’s relationship as one of a mentor and mentee that eventually grows into a solid friendship outside of professional endeavors.
