Mythic Quest S3 Bids Farewell to a Big Legacy Character

Mythic Quest Season 3 returned to Apple TV this November with quite a few changes—Ian and Poppy left MQ to start a new company, while David and Jo championed a new work culture at MQ. There have been updates to every prominent character’s storyline, including Dana, Rachel, Brad, and others.

But one character is glaringly missing—CW Longbottom. What happened to him?

Episode 1 announces CW Longbottom’s death. After learning that he has a terminal illness, he decides to take his own life by driving a Ford Thunderbird into the Grand Canyon.

I’m sure you’re curious to know more about CW’s passing and why exactly Mythic Quest made this creative decision. Read on:

How did CW Longbottom die?

Season 3 Ep 1 begins by depicting what the characters have been up to after Ian and Poppy announced they were leaving MQ. In the midst of this, Jo has been scrambling to organize a party for CW’s “return.”

It”s been implied that he was away for a very long time for business purposes and has asked everyone to be present for his party.

At the end of the episode, when everyone has gathered, Jo asks David to read out CW’s letter that he had asked to open at a very specific time.

David’s narration informs us that after learning about his terminal illness, CW decided to die in his chosen way—by driving into the Grand Canyon in a Ford Thunderbird. (Carol points out that CW’s “original” idea is actually the ending to Thelma and Louise.)

After this, his remains were retrieved, cremated, and put into a satellite, the GPS of which Jo has been tracking, thinking them to be the live location of CW’s flight. He also apologizes for keeping this a secret and expresses gratitude to his MQ-found family.

By the end of the letter, the Mythic Quest employees watch as the satellite passes by them.

Why was CW Longbottom written out of Mythic Quest?

In Season 2, actor F. Murray Abraham was absent from a few episodes, most likely due to Covid-19 risks.

He made a grand return with a backstory episode that dived into how CW was hired to be Mythic Quest’s beloved writer. This episode then followed into a present-day episode that neatly tied up his personal story.

While most of the fans loved this two-part rendition, some were understandably curious about why CW got such dedicated episodes when none of the other characters did. The decision became more obvious when Lionsgate announced in Vanity Fair that Abraham would be exiting the show.

Neither Abraham nor his representatives have stated why he left Mythic Quest. The show has not released any statements either.

There could be a variety of reasons for this, and his current role in The White Lotus Season 2 could be one of them. However, at the moment, it all remains speculation.

The show thought that the best way to write off the character would be to announce his passing. David Hornsby (Mythic Quest’s executive producer, writer, and actor) told Metacritic, “We wanted a story that would see the grandness of a man who writes about the cosmos.”

It was truly one heck of an ending for CW Longbottom!
