MoviePass Website Relaunches With A Countdown Clock

MoviePass, the subscription-based ticket service that declared bankruptcy, makes a comeback with the homepage displaying a countdown clock. The countdown clock ends on Monday, March 22, and comes along with the caption, “the movie is about to start.”

MoviePass was launched in 2011 but didn’t break into the mainstream until 2018 when the parent company Helios & Matheson Analytics lowered services to $9.95/month. The service was formulated to allow subscribers to watch one film per day in theaters at a low monthly cost.

Established by entertainment entrepreneurs Stacy Spikes and Hamet Watt, MoviePass was initially promoted in over 91% of cinemas nationwide. However, MoviePass mayhem started to ignite when the service cut down its prices in 2017. This led to a subscriber multiplication. The unprecedented number of signups resulted in the website crashing and its creators formulated a competition with AMC theaters[1] .

Soon after, MoviePass began to perish as it faced several controversies. These included blacked-out viewings for blockbusters movies and even a data leak that endangered subscribers’ credit card information. Now, it seems MoviePass is striving for a surprising comeback.

Earlier today, the website MoviePass.Ventures began a countdown clock that ends on Monday, March 22, with the caption, “the movie is about to start.” However, the original MoviePass website, Moviepass.com, continues to remain untouched from the shutdown notice that was posted after the company filed for bankruptcy on September 14, 2019.

The countdown clock emerged a month after it was declared that Mark Wahlberg’s company is set to generate a MoviePass docuseries and happens to coincide with the reopening of several movie theater chains in major cities.

Nevertheless, it’s safe to assume that the countdown clock on the MoviePass website implies that the service is suiting up for a relaunch. While the complex rise and fall of MoviePass is a popular topic of conversation, the company’s founders have prevailed to remain dormant since 2019.

MoviePass aspired to be the Netflix of movie hall ticket subscription services. However, the business model drifted far from its original goals. Filled with controversy, inaccuracy, and laxity, the website clearly caused more harm than good and constructed an animosity with movie theater chains. People will have to wait and see what MoviePass reveals when the clock expires on March 22.
